Job description

National Consulting Partners (NCP) is seeking a Senior Starburst Platform Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Summit Data Platform, a large-scale analytics environment operating primarily in Microsoft Azure.

This role will provide hands-on engineering, administration, integration, performance tuning, and operational support for Starburst. The engineer will work with cloud, data, security, architecture, and governance teams to provide secure and reliable access to distributed enterprise data.

The ideal candidate has extensive enterprise data-platform experience, strong knowledge of Starburst, Trino, or Presto, and prior experience supporting federal government systems.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, administer, and support Starburst Enterprise or Trino environments.
  • Manage clusters, catalogs, connectors, schemas, resource groups, and platform configurations.
  • Integrate Starburst with Azure Data Lake Storage, relational databases, data warehouses, object storage, and other enterprise data sources.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize complex SQL queries, query plans, workloads, and platform performance.
  • Support federated-query, data-lake, and lakehouse architectures.
  • Implement role-based access controls, authentication, auditing, and least-privilege security.
  • Support Starburst deployments in Kubernetes, preferably Azure Kubernetes Service.
  • Automate deployment and configuration using CI/CD, infrastructure as code, scripting, Terraform, or Helm.
  • Support monitoring, upgrades, patching, vulnerability remediation, and production incident response.
  • Develop technical documentation, runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with VA stakeholders, engineers, architects, security teams, and data governance personnel.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers.

Requirements

  • At least 15 years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, database engineering, cloud engineering, or enterprise analytics.
  • At least 5 years of experience supporting large-scale enterprise data or analytics platforms.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with Starburst Enterprise, Trino, Presto, or a comparable distributed SQL platform.
  • Advanced SQL development, troubleshooting, and query-optimization skills.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Azure and cloud-based data architectures.
  • Experience with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 or comparable object storage.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Git, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Experience integrating distributed-query platforms with multiple enterprise data sources.
  • Prior federal government experience or experience in a similarly regulated environment.
  • Understanding of federal security, configuration management, vulnerability remediation, and system authorization requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with technical and government stakeholders.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required federal background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Production experience administering Starburst Enterprise.
  • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Starburst certification or advanced technical training.
  • Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience with Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hive, Parquet, or similar data-lake technologies.
  • Experience with Terraform, Helm, Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Experience with Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, Dynatrace, or similar monitoring tools.
  • Familiarity with NIST controls, FISMA, FedRAMP, zero-trust principles, and federal Authority to Operate processes.

Benefits & conditions

The target rate is $90-$95 per hour without employer-sponsored benefits, based on experience and qualifications.

The position is expected to include approximately 1,880 hours annually, equivalent to estimated gross compensation of:

  • $169,200 at $90 per hour
  • $178,600 at $95 per hour

Candidates receiving an employer-sponsored benefits package will be offered a lower hourly rate to account for the cost of those benefits.
