Job description

The Senior Director of Infrastructure & Operations leads the organization’s server, cloud, and network engineering teams and owns the overall health of both the technology environment and the team that runs it. This role is accountable for the availability, performance, security, and cost-efficiency of infrastructure and platform services, and equally accountable for building a stable, engaged, and high-performing organization capable of sustaining that reliability over the long term. The ideal candidate blends deep technical credibility with strong people leadership, using data-driven operational discipline to keep environments healthy and proactive workforce practices to keep the team healthy., Environmental Health & Operational Reliability

  • Own end-to-end health of server, cloud, and network infrastructure, including availability, capacity, performance, and disaster recovery posture.
  • Establish and monitor key operational health indicators (uptime, MTTR/MTTD, incident volume and severity, patch compliance, capacity headroom) and drive continuous improvement against them.
  • Lead incident, problem, and change management practices to reduce unplanned downtime and prevent recurring issues.
  • Champion observability and monitoring maturity (metrics, logging, alerting, automated health checks) across on-prem and cloud environments.
  • Direct proactive maintenance, patching, and lifecycle management to keep environments current, secure, and supportable.
  • Ensure infrastructure architecture and standards are consistently applied across server, cloud, and network domains to reduce complexity and technical debt.Own vendor and managed service provider relationships supporting infrastructure operations, balancing outsourced support with internal capability.

Team Health & Organizational Leadership

  • Lead and develop managers and engineers across server, cloud, and network teams, building clear career paths, succession plans, and cross-training to reduce single points of failure.
  • Monitor team health indicators such as on-call burden, workload distribution, engagement, and retention, and act early to address burnout or attrition risk.
  • Establish healthy on-call and escalation practices that protect team well-being while maintaining strong incident response coverage.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement, encouraging teams to surface risks and operational issues early.Set clear performance expectations and provide regular coaching, feedback, and recognition to build a high-performing, motivated organization.

Strategy, Planning & Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and execute the infrastructure and operations strategy and roadmap in alignment with enterprise technology and business objectives.
  • Partner with security, application, and business teams to ensure infrastructure supports evolving business needs, compliance requirements, and growth.
  • Own the infrastructure and operations budget, including forecasting, cost optimization, and vendor contract negotiation.
  • Report on operational health, risk, and team metrics to senior leadership with clear, data-driven insights that support decision-making.Lead cloud and infrastructure modernization initiatives, balancing stability of existing platforms with ongoing transformation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position works in a comfortable office setting with a computer for a large percentage of the workday. The noise level in the work environment is usually mild. Requirements

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field and 10+ years of progressive IT infrastructure and operations experience, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role overseeing server, cloud, and network teams.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess

  • Advanced degree or relevant certifications (e.g., ITIL, PMP, cloud provider certifications).
  • Experience leading infrastructure modernization or cloud migration initiatives at scale.Background in regulated industries with attention to security, risk, and compliance considerations.

The Senior Director of Infrastructure and Operations is designated as executive management as determined by the OMES Director and is exempt from the provisions of the Civil Service and Human Capital Modernization Act.
