Job description

Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc., (SGA), is searching for an AWS Cloud Database Administrator (DBA) for a contract assignment (potential RTH) with one of our premier Financial Services clients in Midtown , NYC . Hybrid: in-office 2 days/week., The AWS Database Administrator will be responsible for providing hands-on administration and support of SQL Server and MySQL platforms within AWS environments. This role is highly operational and support-driven, focused on ensuring database stability, performance, and responsiveness to ongoing business and application team needs.

The ideal candidate will be a strong, hands-on DBA who can quickly ramp up and support a fast-paced environment with a mix of planned work and ad hoc requests.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on administration of SQL Server (RDS and EC2) and Aurora MySQL databases in AWS
  • Manage database environments including backups, health monitoring, security, and system performance
  • Support database migrations, implementations, maintenance, and troubleshooting across environments
  • Perform performance tuning and optimization of databases, queries, and infrastructure
  • Handle ad hoc support requests from application teams (backups, refreshes, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Investigate and resolve database issues, including root cause analysis
  • Ensure all support requests are handled within defined SLAs and procedural requirements
  • Participate in on-call rotation, providing 24/7 support for incidents, outages, and escalations
  • Support after-hours work for deployments, system changes, and critical operations as needed
  • Collaborate with DBAs, application developers, and business users to meet database service needs

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a Database Administration and support role
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience working in AWS cloud environments
  • Strong experience with:
  • SQL Server (RDS and EC2)
  • MySQL / Aurora MySQL
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL (complex queries, performance tuning, troubleshooting)
  • Strong understanding of cloud database design principles and AWS best practices
  • Experience supporting production environments, including incident response and escalation handling
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis and deep troubleshooting of database issues
  • Experience working in on-call support environments
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally

Preferred Skills

  • Financial services experience
  • Experience with ActiveBatch or similar scheduling/orchestration tools
  • AWS certifications
  • Experience supporting high-demand, operational environments with ad hoc requests
  • Exposure to both cloud and on-prem database environments
