Job description

This is a high-ownership role: you’ll architect systems, make technology decisions, and ship AI-powered features reaching millions of learners - while driving how our team uses the best frontier models and newest AI tools to move faster.

As a force multiplier on a small team, you’ll make sound decisions under ambiguity, own significant parts of our product end to end, and push the frontier of agentic development (autonomous agents, self-driving products, agent loops, and more).

If you’re an experienced full-stack engineer excited to apply cutting-edge AI to real educational challenges, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead our AI-native engineering practice - operationalize how we use AI agents at all levels of product development (including design, coding, review, testing, analytics, and security).
  • Build agentic development workflows - stand up and tune the loops that let agents do real work with a human at the gate, and drive build-vs-buy decisions across a fast-moving tooling landscape.
  • Architect scalable systems that serve - and grow well beyond - our 250,000+ monthly active users, and own features end to end from ambiguous problem through deployment and iteration.
  • Build and own CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows - the verification backbone that makes autonomous workflows trustworthy.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex production issues - performance bottlenecks, scaling limits, and hard-to-reproduce bugs across the full stack.
  • Set engineering standards and mentor engineers - including leveling up the team on working effectively with AI - and collaborate directly with the founders.

Requirements

  • 5-8+ years of professional full-stack web development, with demonstrated end-to-end ownership.
  • Hands-on, cutting-edge experience building software with AI - you use AI agents and workflows as a core part of how you ship and can speak to what works, what doesn’t, and how to do it safely and effectively at a team level.
  • Proven track record of architecting and scaling production systems to significant traffic, with strong judgment around performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Deep, hands-on deployment, CI/CD, and application security experience - owning pipelines, infrastructure, and data-privacy practices, not just using them.
  • Excellent debugging skills - systematically isolating and resolving complex, high-stakes production issues.

Required Technical Skills:

AI

  • Mastery of AI coding agents (e.g. Claude Code)
  • Hands-on experience with common AI models and agentic frameworks (e.g. Native AI SDKs, LangChain), including fine-tuning, embeddings, vector search, etc.

Frontend

  • TypeScript, Next.js, Tailwind CSS
  • Strong UI/UX sensibility and attention to design detail

Backend

  • Node.js, Express, MongoDB
  • Cloud platforms (e.g. Vercel, Render, AWS)
  • CI/CD tooling and deployment automation (e.g. GitHub Actions, Terraform)
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, particularly for AI/data workflows

Architecture & Operations

  • Designing for scale: caching, indexing, query optimization, and horizontal scaling
  • Observability and monitoring, with a track record of resolving production issues

Required Soft Skills:

  • Excellent English (written and verbal)
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to drive projects independently
  • Strong technical judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Startup mentality - pragmatic, fast-moving, and collaborative

Nice-to-Have:

  • EdTech experience
  • Passion for language learning

Benefits & conditions

  • 100% Remote
  • Flexible hours (async-friendly), with one daily sync meeting
  • Competitive salary
  • Access to the best frontier models and newest AI tools

About the company

Roxxem is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep full-stack web development experience to lead how we build software with AI. Join us at the cutting edge of agentic software development as we create the world’s first AI-native language-learning textbook., Roxxem is an AI-native EdTech startup on a mission to revolutionize language teaching through the world’s most popular content. Imagine learning Spanish with Shakira TikToks or English with the Big Bang Theory - real-world, immersive, personalized learning made fun and effective. Our vision? To create the go-to 21st-century language curriculum for every learner around the globe. In just two years, we’ve grown to 20,000 language teachers and 250,000 monthly active users. With rapid expansion underway, we want to scale our team and impact even faster.

Our team is small but mighty: Hugo, a former language teacher turned coder; Shawn, a former consultant with an MBA from the University of Chicago; and Jingjing, an AI software engineer with a Ph.D. in Computer Science. We move fast, value people first, and are driven by a shared passion to build something that truly matters.

Why Join Us?

  • Work directly with experienced founders in a startup where your ideas matter.
  • Help define how a modern team builds software with AI - real ownership over our agentic engineering practice, not just permission to use AI on the side.
  • Shape an innovative product used by passionate teachers around the world.
  • Learn from teammates who’ve worked at Meta, Netflix, and in consulting and private equity.
  • Flexible remote environment with potential for future opportunities.
