Job description

At McGraw Hill, we are dedicated to delivering digital learning experiences that transform education for learners and educators. Our focus is on creating seamless, impactful products that truly benefit our users while supporting growth and collaboration across teams. We foster a culture that values innovation, teamwork, and a balance between career growth and personal well-being.

Your impact on the team

As an Engineering Manager on Sharpen, you will lead teams of software engineers building one of McGraw Hill’s most innovative, fast-growing products-a multi-platform learning experience spanning native mobile apps, AI-driven learning web experiences, and instructor web courseware. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will drive delivery, team health, and technical excellence while partnering cross-functionally to align with product goals. This role requires a highly technical leader with broad experience and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills in a SOX and SOC 2-compliant environment where engineering, security, and operational rigor matter.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead, coach, and develop software engineering teams while fostering collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.
  • Own team commitments and deliver high-quality work on time across Sharpen’s mobile apps, AI driven learning experiences, and instructor courseware.
  • Translate product and design requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Communicate decisions, tradeoffs, status, and risks clearly to stakeholders at all levels, building trust across product, design, engineering, and other partners.
  • Apply broad technical judgment across mobile, web, databases, AWS, and data to guide architecture and technical decisions without micromanaging.
  • Partner with engineering teams and stakeholders to integrate systems effectively and align with platform architecture.
  • Ensure the team’s work meets SOX and SOC 2 requirements by embedding controls, auditability, and changing management discipline into daily engineering practices.
  • Encourage modern development practices, including automation and AI-based efficiencies, where appropriate. Promote engineering excellence in code quality, testing, performance, delivery, and reliability.

  • Stay current on software development and technology trends to inform strategic decisions and team direction.

Requirements

  • Passion for using technology to improve educational outcomes.
  • Strong foundation in computer science or a related field, with 5+ years of software development experience and at least 2 years in an engineering leadership role.
  • Proven ability to lead and grow engineering teams in a collaborative, agile environment.
  • Broad, hands-on technical experience across the stack, including mobile (iOS/Android/Swift), web (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js), relational and non-relational databases, AWS, and data.
  • Experience building scalable tools or platforms in a product-oriented setting used at scale.
  • Experience operating in a SOX- and/or SOC 2-compliant environment. Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with comfort working across functions and distributed teams.
  • Commitment to innovation, quality, and user-centered development.

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Experience in EdTech or with systems that support digital learning.
  • Experience building consumer mobile applications or AI/ML-driven product features.
  • Familiarity with AI or automation in software development workflows.
  • Exposure to platform or infrastructure engineering in a cloud-based environment.
  • Experience building accessible web and mobile applications., There has never been a better time to join McGraw Hill. In our culture of curiosity and innovation, you will be able to own your growth and develop as we do.
