Job description

We are seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to take technical ownership of network test automation development on a multi-data-center Secure DMZ program. This role is responsible for designing and building the automation framework that validates network device configurations and infrastructure changes before deployment, using a Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) environment and a Network as Code (NaC) / GitLab CI pipeline architecture. The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior engineer who can both write production-grade automation code and provide technical direction to less senior engineers on the team., * Design, develop, and maintain the automated testing framework used to certify and validate network changes and configurations prior to production deployment

  • Build and own automation workflows using Cisco NaC (Network as Code) delivered through GitLab CI/CD pipelines (validate ? plan ? apply)
  • Stand up and manage a Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) environment to support pre-production prototyping, MVP validation, and regression testing across multiple data centers
  • Develop Python-based automation components, including input mechanisms, environment build/baseline workflows, pre- and post-test execution, and reporting/logging
  • Write production-grade Python that follows engineering best practices - robust error handling and exception management, idempotent operations, and strict static typing
  • Establish and enforce coding standards for the automation codebase (linting, type checking, code review gates) as part of the CI/CD pipeline
  • Create automated tests (unit, integration, and system-level) that validate infrastructure automation workflows against prioritized hardware platforms
  • Configure and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support static code analysis and validation of test automation components
  • Provide senior-level technical direction and code review for Automation Engineers on the team; mentor and transfer knowledge to client engineering staff
  • Participate in daily standups, bi-weekly sprint planning, and bi-weekly stakeholder demonstrations, presenting working features and test results
  • Produce as-built documentation (architecture notes, usage instructions, README files) for each Git repository delivered
  • Support gap analysis and end-state automation architecture design in collaboration with client stakeholders during the Analysis & Design phase

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in network automation or infrastructure engineering, with demonstrated senior-level ownership of automation deliverables
  • Strong Python development skills, including experience building and testing automation frameworks, applying Python best practices such as robust error/exception handling, designing idempotent automation, and strict typing/type hints for production code
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco Network as Code (NaC) or equivalent infrastructure-as-code approaches to network configuration
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in GitLab (or directly transferable experience in another CI/CD platform with willingness to specialize in GitLab)
  • Experience with Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) or comparable network simulation/lab environments (e.g., GNS3, EVE-NG)
  • Working knowledge of REST APIs and their use in network automation and orchestration
  • Experience with multi-data-center or multi-site network architectures, ideally DMZ/perimeter security environments
  • Familiarity with firewall platforms (e.g., Palo Alto) in a DMZ/perimeter security context
  • Comfortable operating in an Agile delivery model (sprint planning, daily standups, bi-weekly demos)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience on a client-facing consulting or professional services delivery team
  • Experience with ServiceNow, particularly in the context of change management or network automation integration
  • Exposure to Ansible or Terraform for infrastructure-as-code automation
  • Cisco certifications (CCNP/CCIE) or equivalent
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading a small technical team
