Job description

At GM Motorsports, we are driven by a clear purpose: to accelerate our teams’ ability to win on the racetrack and in the marketplace. Our vision is to be the benchmark of global motorsports excellence, inspiring enduring passion for our brands and products through world-class performance, innovation, and teamwork. We are looking for people who share our mindset and core values - ownership in organizational success, a commitment to add value to our team, and the courage to reject mediocrity in pursuit of exceptional results.

This role operates across two critical dimensions. First, it leads a focused team of five highly technical specialists responsible for operating a full vehicle dynamometer. Second, it is accountable for delivering a best-in-class closed-loop development environment that seamlessly integrates analysis, driver-in-the-loop simulation, powertrain dynamometer testing, and full vehicle dynamometer capabilities to accelerate calibration, improve correlation, and ultimately enhance overall vehicle performance.

What You’ll Do Organizational Leadership & People Development

Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing team of dyno and simulation engineers

Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, safety, and continuous improvement

Serve as a technical thought leader and coach, elevating team capability in, Real-time simulation, Dyno operations, and Hardware/software integration

Drive workforce planning aligned to future propulsion and simulation needs

Push the transfer of technology and capabilities the team is developing to GM’s production vehicle development teams

Technical & System Ownership

Own the architecture, deployment, and performance of an integrated system linking: Powertrain dynamometers (ICE, hybrid, EV drive units), Driver-in-the-Loop simulators, Real-time modeling platforms, Full-vehicle/chassis dynamometers

Deliver a seamless closed-loop, real-time environment (PIL / DiL / ViL)

Define and enforce Interface standards, Signal architecture, and Latency and synchronization requirements

Enterprise Integration & Cross-Functional Leadership

Serve as the single-point technical integrator across: Race Program Propulsion Systems

Influence program strategies by enabling: Faster calibration cycles, Improved simulation fidelity, Reduced dependence on track testing

Lead cross-functional alignment on model correlation and validation standards in the area of motorsports propulsion.

Simulation, Controls & Model Integration with Full Car Dyno and XiL Systems

Oversee integration between: Vehicle dynamics models (lap sim, drivability), Powertrain/energy system models (ICE, motor, ESS), Propulsion Controls strategies (torque arbitration, energy mgmt.)

Ensure models are: Real-time capable and correlated to hardware and track data

Drive advancement of model-based development and digital twin capabilities

Test Strategy & Execution

Define and execute integrated validation strategies: Powertrain-in-the-loop (PIL), Driver-in-the-loop (DiL), Vehicle-in-the-loop (ViL)

Enable rapid iteration of: Calibration strategies, Energy management approaches, Drivability and transient performance

Deliver high-fidelity correlation across simulation dyno track

Safety, Compliance & Operational Excellence

Ensure safe operation of: High-voltage electrified systems, High-speed rotating machinery, Integrated dyno environments

Implement robust: Fault detection systems, Hardware/software safeguards, Emergency response protocols

Drive uptime, reliability, and operational efficiency of test assets

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field

10-15+ years of progressive experience in propulsion, simulation, or vehicle systems

Demonstrated leadership experience (direct leadership or technical leadership of complex programs)

Proven experience in powertrain dynamometer testing (engine, hybrid, or EV systems)

Proven experience real-time simulation or hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) environments

Technical Expertise

Deep knowledge of: Powertrain systems (ICE, hybrid, EV), Vehicle dynamics and performance modeling, Closed-loop control systems

Hands-on experience with: Real-time platforms (dSPACE, NI, Speedgoat, etc.), Modeling tools (Simulink, GT-SUITE, Amesim, CarSim/IPG)

Strong understanding of: System integration challenges, Latency and real-time execution constraints, Communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet)

Leadership Capabilities

Demonstrated ability to: Lead small, highly skilled technical teams, Influence without direct authority across organizations, Translate technical complexity into clear business value

Possess strong execution mindset with ability to deliver in ambiguous, fast-paced environments

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Advanced Technical Experience

Integration experience across: Driver-in-the-Loop systems, Full-vehicle (chassis) dynamometers, Co-simulation frameworks (FMI/FMU)

Experience with: Electrified propulsion systems (battery systems, inverters, motors), Advanced control strategies (torque vectoring, energy optimization), Digital twin or model-based development ecosystems

Motorsports / Performance Background

Experience supporting: Racing programs; High-performance or advanced vehicle programs

Direct involvement in: Track correlation and data feedback loops

Strategic & Enterprise Experience

Experience defining: Technical roadmaps; Capability investment strategies

Exposure to: Capital planning for test facilities; Global engineering collaboration
