Job description

Provides functional and empirical analysis related to the design, development, and implementation of software systems that support the laboratory’s research operations, including utility, development, and diagnostic software for the lab’s microscopy image management and analysis platform. The candidate will participate in developing test strategies and systems for these products. Working under the general supervision of the lab’s PI, the candidate will apply established software engineering concepts, practices, and procedures to build, integrate, and operate the platform that manages and processes large-scale microscopy image data for neural circuit mapping and spatial genetic profiling., * Will provide functional and empirical analysis related to the design, development, and implementation of the lab’s research software platform, including its backend services, frontend interfaces, and supporting utility, development, and diagnostic software.

  • Designs and implements REST APIs, scalable backend systems, and database schemas for large-scale microscopy image data.
  • Integrates and operates AI inference services in production, ensuring performance and reliability.
  • Participates in the development of test strategies and systems, including automated test coverage, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, monitoring, and reliability engineering.
  • Analyzes, compares, and evaluates alternative technical and architectural approaches, and makes independent decisions on matters of significance within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Deploys, monitors, and maintains platform features in production, and documents technical designs and decisions.
  • Collaborates with the senior lab members through code review, one-on-one meetings, and lab meetings to align work with research objectives.
  • Knows and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of software engineering well.
  • Analyzes, compares, and evaluates various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of full-stack web development, including backend and frontend frameworks, REST API design, and relational database design.
  • Experience integrating and deploying AI or machine-learning inference services in production.
  • Familiarity with version control, code review workflows, CI/CD, monitoring, and reliability practices.
