Staff/Lead Machine Learning Engineer, Behavior & Planning

Experteer Overview In this role you will lead ML initiatives for Nuro’s Behavior & Planning stack, transforming driving data into safe, natural behavior. You’ll push research into real-world deployment on autonomous vehicles, addressing hard problems across prediction, decision making, and planning. You’ll shape technical direction, collaborate across teams, and mentor others while expanding models to new geographies and vehicle platforms. This is a high-ownership, impact-driven opportunity at the frontier of applied ML in autonomy. Compensation / Benefits * Provide technical leadership across the autonomy stack from idea to on-road deployment * Design, train, and productionize state-of-the-art models (foundation/world models, LLM/VLM reasoning, reinforcement/imitation learning, generative/diffusion models, transformer-based planning) * Develop models that generalize to new cities, geographies, and vehicle platforms * Partner with Perception, Simulation & Evaluation, ML Infra & Data, and other orgs to align priorities and solve autonomy challenges * Own the full model lifecycle: data, training, onboard inference, evaluation, and continuous on-road iteration * Mentor engineers/researchers and influence roadmap and technical strategy Tasks * 7+ years building and deploying machine learning systems with multi-team leadership experience * MS in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics, or related field or equivalent practical experience * Strong foundations in machine learning with ability to reason across architectures, training, and evaluation * Depth in sequential decision making, prediction, generative modeling, foundation/world models, or representation learning * Knowledge of the full ML development cycle from data collection to deployment and iteration * Strong Python (and/or C++) programming skills * Proven ability to lead initiatives, collaborate across teams, and work with minimal oversight * Efficient and clear communication to align cross-functional stakeholders Key requirements * annual performance bonus * equity * competitive benefits package
