Job description

My client are looking for strong Java Developers to play a key role in building and evolving the technology that powers our core products and services. You’ll design, develop and maintain robust, scalable and secure Java applications, helping us deliver high-quality software that performs at scale.

From developing modern microservices and APIs to strengthening our CI/CD and cloud capabilities, you’ll have the opportunity to work across the full software development lifecycle. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, cares about engineering quality and wants to make a meaningful contribution to both the technology and the wider team.

Design, develop and deploy high-performing Java applications and microservices, ensuring they meet requirements for scalability, reliability and security.

  • Write clean, maintainable and efficient code, applying engineering best practices including TDD, automated testing and coding standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, championing quality, consistency and continuous improvement across the codebase.
  • Design and build RESTful APIs that integrate reliably and securely with internal and external systems.
  • Partner with DevOps and engineering colleagues to optimise applications for CI/CD, containerisation and cloud environments, including Docker, Kubernetes and AWS.
  • Investigate and resolve complex technical issues, helping to maintain system stability, resilience and performance.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, architecture decisions and the continuous improvement of our engineering practices.
  • For M2: Mentor and support junior developers, sharing knowledge and helping to build a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture.

Requirements

  • Strong commercial experience developing and maintaining Java applications, with proficiency in modern Java (Java 11+) and the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring MVC and Spring Data.
  • A strong understanding of microservices architecture, RESTful API design and application security, including technologies and approaches such as OAuth2 and JWT.
  • Hands-on experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including data modelling, query optimisation and ORM frameworks.
  • Experience with automated testing, using tools such as JUnit and Mockito, alongside containerisation technologies such as Docker.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, ideally AWS, and an understanding of modern cloud-native development practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to turn complex technical challenges into practical, scalable and effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering and wider business teams and explain technical concepts clearly.
  • A proactive approach to continuous learning and technical improvement, with a willingness to share knowledge and contribute to the development of those around you.

Nice to have

  • Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms, such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience working within a regulated environment, with an understanding of compliance, governance and associated engineering considerations.
  • Familiarity with GitLab, particularly for source control and CI/CD pipeline management.

Key technologies

Modern Java (Java 11+), Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data

AWS, Docker, Kubernetes

PostgreSQL and other relational databases, NoSQL technologies

Kafka, RabbitMQ and event-driven architectures

JUnit, Mockito and automated testing practices
