Job description
Our TCD Power Systems team supports utilities, developers, and investors in addressing grid integration challenges for generation and transmission projects, including renewable energy, battery storage, and HVDC interconnections.
With the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBR) and HVDC systems, electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies are becoming critical to assess system stability and control interactions.
You will be part of a global team delivering advanced EMT and power system studies across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, contributing to both project execution and technical development.
Responsibilities:
- EMT modelling s simulation
- Perform electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies using PSCAD, including HVDC systems, renewable generation (solar, wind), and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
- Develop, adapt, validate and troubleshoot detailed EMT models, including converter controls, plant controllers, protection systems and network equivalents.
- Assess converter performance under weak-grid conditions, faults, switching events, energisation, recovery following disturbances, and adverse control interactions.
- Validate EMT models against manufacturer documentation, test reports or engineering expectations to ensure technically credible simulation results.
- Investigate numerical convergence issues, control interactions, oscillations and unexpected EMT simulation behaviour, identify root causes, and develop technically justified solutions.
- Integrate, adapt and validate manufacturer-supplied EMT models while ensuring consistency with study objectives and network representation.
- Grid integration s converter-based resources
- Contribute to grid integration studies involving inverter-based resources (IBR) and HVDC technologies
- Assess system impacts of converter-based resources and support identification of technical risks and mitigation measures
- Project delivery s coordination
- Deliver defined EMT study tasks independently while working under the technical guidance of senior engineers on more complex assignments.
- Coordinate with internal teams for inputs, modelling assumptions, and validation
- Support RMS and steady-state teams to ensure consistency between EMT and system-level studies
- Reporting s technical interaction
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, clearly communicating modelling assumptions, study methodology, key findings and engineering recommendations.
- Present results and conclusions to internal teams and support client discussions when required
- Continuous development
- Contribute to the development of internal EMT modelling practices, reusable libraries, automation tools and technical guidance documents.
- Stay updated on developments in HVDC, inverter-based technologies, and EMT simulation tools
- Develop expertise in advanced EMT applications, including HVDC, grid-forming inverters, renewable plant controllers and interactions between inverter-based resources.
Requirements
Required
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering (Power Systems or related field).
- Typically 3 - 8 years of experience in power system studies
- Practical experience performing EMT studies using PSCAD.
Preferred
- Exposure to projects involving HVDC systems, renewable energy (solar, wind), or battery energy storage is strongly preferred
- Experience working with OEM-supplied EMT models.
Technical competencies
Required
- Strong practical knowledge of PSCAD, including model development, simulation setup, debugging, result interpretation and post-processing.
- Good understanding of power electronic converters, converter control systems, and electromagnetic transient phenomena.
- Ability to build and adapt EMT models, analyze simulation results, and identify system issues
- Understanding of grid integration challenges and system stability concepts
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate technical issues and develop engineering solutions.
Preferred
- Ability to critically interpret EMT simulation results and distinguish modelling artefacts from genuine physical system behaviour.
Software & Tools
Required
- Hands-on experience using PSCAD for EMT studies.
- Ability to develop and modify EMT simulation cases.
- Experience with PSCAD project organisation and reusable libraries.
- Experience implementing or modifying custom PSCAD components.
- Familiarity with PSS®E and/or DIgSILENT Power Factory is an advantage
- Experience with Python, MATLAB or scripting for automation and post-processing of EMT simulation results.
Soft skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Attention to detail and ability to work on complex technical topics
- Ability to work independently and within international teams
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly communicate technical findings to multidisciplinary teams.
