Senior Backend Software Engineer

Experteer Overview In this Senior Backend role you will shape SPAN Cloud, connecting hardware, mobile apps, dashboards and external APIs. You’ll design scalable, secure data-driven services that serve homeowners, installers, fleet operators, and utility partners. You’ll bridge Cloud and Platform teams, guiding Kubernetes strategy, networking, and observability while delivering end-to-end features. You’ll work across firmware, frontend, and backend to build cohesive, scalable energy-management solutions. Compensation / Benefits * Design and develop features and subsystems for the SPAN Cloud to support diverse end users * Bridge Cloud and Platform teams on deployment, reliability, and infrastructure design * Collaborate with product and design to translate customer needs into features * Coordinate with firmware, frontend, and backend teams to build cohesive products * Work with Kotlin and TypeScript in cloud environments using gRPC, REST, GraphQL and MQTT for IoT devices * Design APIs and data specifications for internal and external users including large enterprise clients * Mentor teammates and share best practices to elevate the engineering organization * Maintain and evolve services with scaling plans, version upgrades, and technical debt management * Act as Cloud team SME on Kubernetes, networking, and observability standards Tasks * 4+ years as a backend engineer with ownership of projects and features * Experience with cross-domain collaboration * Experience with AWS (cloud-native platforms) * Experience with version control, type systems, linting, and unit testing * 4+ years in a common backend language with Kotlin, TypeScript, and Python * Strong JVM expertise with performance tuning and memory management * Deep Apache Kafka experience (topics, consumer groups, stream processing) * Hands-on Kubernetes experience including debugging and deployment architecture * Experience operating observability platforms at scale (Datadog) Key requirements * Competitive compensation + equity * Comprehensive medical/dental/vision benefits * Parental leave up to 24 weeks * Flexible hours * Office near BART and Caltrain * Strong team culture and events
