Job description
The Supervisor, Failure Analysis & Support, will be responsible for developing and then advancing FirstEnergy’s event and equipment failure analytics to enhance the company’s asset management strategy. This will be accomplished through developing processes, performing causal analyses, interfacing with diverse stakeholder groups, building a diverse and effective team, and improving technologies to allow for better tracking and analysis. This position will be responsible for all aspects pertaining to failure tracking, analysis and reporting of FirstEnergy’s assets. This is a new position, intended to develop and grow the company’s ability to leverage event and failure data to better our long-term performance.
This position reports to the Manager, Asset Performance Monitoring. The preferred location is at the Center for Advanced Technology (CAET) in Akron, Ohio 44313, however, other locations within the FirstEnergy footprint will be considered
Responsibilities include:
- Demonstrating and directing a solid commitment to all aspects of safety.
- Directing and developing staff responsible for management of the event and failure analytics program that supports FirstEnergy’s assets (e.g., substation and line).
- Identifying asset populations with recurring reliability or lifecycle performance concerns and recommending portfolio-level replacement and mitigation strategies to reduce risk and improve system reliability.
- Collaborating with other business units across FirstEnergy to ensure causal analyses and documentation are complete and accurate.
- Developing and issuing failure analytics reporting that can be used to better our asset management strategy.
- Developing documentation to manage all aspects of the event and failure analytics program.
- Overseeing and supporting the capital portfolio development process for projects recommended by the AMRC department.
- Engaging with utility industry experts and peers on matters related to failure analyses and associated programmatic implementation.
- Effectively managing vendor/contractor resources to achieve program goals.
- Conducting applicant interviews, managing employees’ performance to achieve established objectives, conducting performance reviews with employees, and providing coaching on an ongoing basis.
- Understanding and managing work according to business needs, departmental budget, and regulatory requirements.
- Setting priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinating work activities with other supervisors and/or managers.
- Encouraging open, honest, direct, and ongoing conversation amongst team members.
- Leading process improvement activities that increase productivity and enhance data quality.
- Analyzing complex issues and developing actionable recommendation; ensuring decisions impacting the team and FE Regional Management are based on data and sound reasoning.
- Supporting the Emergency Plan through participating in the assigned storm duties including hazard response and hazard dispatch activities.
Requirements
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in an engineering with a minimum of 5 years of related work experience. A bachelor’s degree in a non-engineering discipline will be considered with applicable experience.
- In lieu of a degree, 7 years of direct, related experience will be considered. The experience must include intimate knowledge of transmission and distribution equipment along with an in-depth understanding of the equipment’s life cycle.
- Experience with failure analytics and the application of statistical analysis techniques for trend determination.
- Proven effective leadership skills to communicate with and direct work of others that will ensure safety and produce satisfactory work.
- Excellent customer relations skills and strong communication skills to make clear, accurate and concise oral and written reports.
- Experience in obtaining, maintaining, analyzing and reporting on data with data visualization and reporting tools.
- Knowledge work management processes and procedures preferred.
- Familiarity of equipment used by electrical utilities and related attributes preferred.
- An understanding of utility capital and O&M programs for the management of assets.
- Ability to manage a dynamic work environment with travel periodically between multiple local work locations and occasional overnight stay required.
- Established relationships with internal customers is a plus.
- Strong oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to various levels in the organization.
- Excellent analytical abilities involving complex problems; exercise sound judgment; detail oriented.
- Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships.
- Familiarity with - PI Vision / Cascade / APM / QlikView / EDOA / CrossBow / SAP is preferred.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Word.

FirstEnergy takes a market-based approach to pay, which may vary depending on your location. In addition, your actual base salary will depend on various factors such as your skills, qualifications, and experience.
The estimated pay range for this role is $116,025- $163,800. The pay range for certain locations, including the state of New Jersey, include a 20% differential to account for an increased cost of living, making the pay range $139,230 - $196,560
