Job description

  • Build and enhance 3rd party integrations: Architect and develop complex, high-volume integrations with third-party systems.
  • Own the integrations foundation end to end: self-serve setup, scalability, rate limiting, retries, and observability into integration health.
  • Debug and support live integrations: Get hands-on with debugging, setting up, and maintaining integrations in production, including direct troubleshooting on customer calls.
  • Scale our systems: Iterate on backend architecture to support the growing needs of thousands of users, keeping systems robust and scalable.
  • Ensure reliability: Guarantee applications are reliable, well-instrumented, and free from bugs, with clear ownership of where and how integration health is monitored.
  • Strategic participation: Help shape product and architecture strategy, bringing informed perspective on the tools, practices, and platform decisions the team relies on daily.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with product, design, and customer success to ship and support integrations with real users.

Requirements

  • 8-12 years of full-stack development experience, roughly 80% backend / 20% frontend
  • Highly proficient in TypeScript and Node (Express)
  • Architecturally-minded, with strong experience in data schema modeling and comfort across relational databases
  • Deep experience building read/write integrations to third-party systems, including transferring large volumes of data daily with systems you don’t own
  • Strong grasp of data synchronization strategies: ETL, data normalization, webhooks and polling, idempotency, rate limiting/throttling, back-off and retry logic, dead-letter queues
  • Experience with API design and lifecycle - public/external APIs, API versioning, OAuth/authentication
  • Experience with scheduled job/worker and queue systems (Prisma, BullMQ, SQS, RabbitMQ, or similar)
  • Comfortable on customer calls - debugging live issues and gathering integration requirements directly from customers
  • You know how to instrument a system so failures surface before a customer notices, and you can reason about infrastructure trade-offs (scaling workers, managing queue backpressure, isolating failures) without needing a dedicated DevOps team to hold your hand.
  • You use AI tools to move faster, but you know where to draw the line. You can read and reason about generated code rather than shipping it blind, and you know when a problem needs your own judgment instead of a prompt.

__At Trunk Tools, we’re working hard to build a more productive and safer environment within the construction industry, and we strive to live by these same values here at Trunk Tools HQ. As an equal-opportunity employer, we are committed to building an inclusive environment where you can be you. We work hard to evaluate all employees and job applicants consistently, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected class.

About the company

At Trunk Tools, we’re the leading AI company revolutionizing construction, the second-largest industry on earth. We recently raised a $40M Series B led by Insight Partners, bringing our total funding to $70M from top-tier investors including Redpoint and Innovation Endeavors. This new round is fueling our next phase of growth as we scale AI agents across the jobsite.

Our mission is to build the future of construction through intelligent automation. Despite being a $13+ trillion industry, construction still runs largely on analog processes, we’re changing that by embedding AI directly into field operations.

Founded by builders and technologists (Stanford, MIT), our team has delivered software used by over 140,000 field professionals, impacting millions of users and contributing to $10B+ in built projects. Many of us come from the field ourselves, giving us a deep understanding of the industry’s unique challenges.

After years of building the “brain” of construction, we’re now launching production-ready AI agents, starting with intelligent document processing and Q&A, and rapidly expanding into core operational workflows. Our team has doubled in the past year, and with 100+ employees (50+ engineers), we’re scaling fast and entering a period of hypergrowth. This is a rare opportunity to join at an inflection point.
