Backend Software Engineer

Experteer Overview As a Backend Software Engineer, you design and maintain web-based services powering eBird, Merlin, Macaulay Library, and Birds of the World. You will help evolve CLO’s infrastructure toward scalable, cloud-based systems while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver data-driven applications. Your work supports a global community of researchers, conservationists, and enthusiasts through robust APIs, services, and platforms. This role offers meaningful impact in biodiversity tech and citizen science, with hybrid work in Ithaca. Compensation / Benefits * Design, develop, and maintain web-based applications and related services for CLO and external customers * Contribute to evolution of technical infrastructure and hosting platforms toward scalable, cloud-based systems * Serve as liaison to align application infrastructure with CLO strategic objectives * Develop web systems, APIs, and database apps using Java, Spring, JavaScript, GIS, and Postgres * Stay current with software development best practices and processes Tasks * Bachelor in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent) * 3+ years of relevant software project experience * 3+ years in OO programming and building APIs/web services/frontends * 3+ years of Java, Spring, and SQL experience * Experience with React, Vue.js, Angular, Next.js, or Nuxt * Relational DB design and complex query optimization * Containerization with Kubernetes or Docker * Cloud platforms (AWS preferred or Azure) * CI/CD and automation (e.g., Jenkins) * Linux, Git, Agile/Scrum * Jira * Proven documentation and testing of code * Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills * Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently * Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing Key requirements * health care options * retirement contributions * wellbeing programs * paid leave and holidays * tuition assistance and education benefits * employee discounts
