Job description
- Future BESS Applications & System Requirements: Analyze future application requirements for utility-scale and C&I energy storage, including renewable co-location, PV + BESS, AI data centers, large industrial sites, and hybrid behind-the-meter and front-of-the-meter systems. Translate market and application trends into future system and product requirements.
- Next-Generation BESS Architecture: Research and develop advanced ESS/BESS architectures covering system topology, battery configuration, DC distribution, power conversion, protection, thermal management and system-level control. Explore new architectures to improve system efficiency, reliability, safety, power density, scalability and lifecycle value.
- AC/DC Coupling & Requirement Translation: Develop and optimize AC- and DC-coupled system architectures and translate grid-side and application requirements into DC-side specifications, including battery configuration, DC voltage/current range, DC/DC topology, PCS sizing, energy-to-power ratio, protection and control requirements.
- Grid Integration & System Control: Analyze grid codes and system requirements including active/reactive power capability, overload and short-circuit behavior, voltage and frequency support, power quality and grid-forming operation. Develop corresponding system architectures and coordinated control concepts for batteries, PCS, DC/DC converters and plant-level controllers.
- System Modeling & Architecture Optimization: Develop and apply system-level modeling, simulation and architecture evaluation methodologies using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, PowerFactory or equivalent platforms. Evaluate architecture alternatives and optimize efficiency, availability, lifetime, performance, scalability and total cost of ownership.
- System Integration & Validation: Drive cross-disciplinary integration of battery systems, PCS, DC/DC converters, protection and plant-level control. Support prototype development, CHIL/PHIL testing, system-level validation and engineering verification to bring new system concepts from research into practical product solutions.
- Technology Insights & Standardization: Track emerging technologies including high-voltage DC architectures, advanced PCS and DC/DC topologies, grid-forming BESS, multi-converter systems and hybrid energy storage. Follow relevant European grid codes, standards and standardization activities and provide technical insights for future product development.
- Technology Roadmap & External Collaboration: Collaborate closely with Huawei Headquarters research and product teams to develop future technology roadmaps and translate advanced research into products. Build strong cooperation with leading European universities, research institutes and industrial partners., * To keep your development ongoing, you will find a broad range of training opportunities. Requirements
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Systems, Energy Systems, Control Engineering or a closely related field.
- Typically 10+ years of industrial or applied R&D experience in battery energy storage, grid-scale power conversion, power systems or similarly complex electrical energy systems, with demonstrated senior or principal-level technical responsibility.
- Deep expertise in BESS electrical architecture, power conversion and grid integration, combined with strong system-level understanding of batteries and BMS, DC/DC converters, PCS/inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection, thermal management, automation and plant-level control.
- Proven experience defining complex system architectures, reference architectures, system requirements, subsystem interfaces or high-level technical specifications.
- Strong capability to translate grid, market and application requirements into system architecture and component-level technical specifications.
- Solid expertise in power electronics, grid-connected energy storage, grid codes, grid-forming technologies and coordinated control of complex multi-converter systems.
- Strong experience in system modeling and simulation for architecture design and optimization, using MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS, PowerFactory or comparable tools.
- Experience in architecture trade-off analysis considering efficiency, reliability, availability, safety, lifetime, scalability, performance and total cost of ownership.
- Hands-on experience in prototype development, system integration, CHIL/PHIL testing, engineering validation, commissioning or product development is highly valued.
- Proven technical leadership and project management experience, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive complex R&D projects from concept and prototyping toward product implementation.
- Strong communication skills and experience working in international and cross-functional teams.
- Fluent in English.
