Job description
A leading commercial insurance carrier is seeking an AVP, Claims | Technical Claims Office to support the organization’s most complex, high-exposure claim matters. This is a coverage-intensive role focused on legal strategy, trial oversight, executive reporting, and resolution planning across General Liability, Business Auto, Excess/Umbrella, Inland Marine, and Professional Liability claims, including Programs and Middle Markets. This is not a direct people-management role and is not a corporate officer position. The person selected will serve as a senior technical claims resource for complex coverage matters, high-severity losses, litigation strategy, and leadership-facing claim recommendations. Responsibilities
- Lead strategy on complex coverage matters, high-severity claims, multi-jurisdictional disputes, class actions, declaratory judgment actions, and suits against the company.
- Oversee trial strategy, litigation direction, loss evaluation, reserve adequacy, and resolution planning on high-exposure matters.
- Evaluate coverage, liability, damages, reserves, litigation posture, trial exposure, loss potential, and resolution options.
- Prepare reports, legal analysis, recommendations, and executive-level updates for senior claims leadership and key stakeholders.
- Partner with Claims, Legal, Underwriting, and technical claims leadership on coverage issues, claim strategy, emerging risks, and decision-making.
- Monitor commercial insurance law, emerging case law, claim trends, coverage trends, and fair claim practices.
- Support cross-functional claim initiatives focused on complex claims, technical claim handling, and litigation oversight.

Requirements
- Juris Doctor required.
- Active bar license required and must be in good standing.
- Minimum of 10 years of attorney experience.
- Significant claims experience required; legal practice experience alone is not enough.
- Strong background in complex coverage, high-exposure claims, coverage litigation, trial strategy, and severe claim outcomes.
- Experience handling or overseeing multi-jurisdictional claims, class actions, declaratory judgment actions, suits against an insurer, and high-exposure commercial claim matters.
- Experience with General Liability, Business Auto, Excess/Umbrella, Inland Marine, Professional Liability, Programs, and/or Middle Markets.
- Strong writing, reporting, legal analysis, negotiation, and recommendation skills.
- Ability to advise senior claims leadership, legal, insureds, brokers, counsel, and internal business partners.
- Strong judgment, prioritization, and ability to influence without direct reporting authority.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Power BI or similar reporting tools a plus.
- Hybrid schedule; locations include Morristown, NJ or Hartford, CT.

Compensation Package
- Base salary range: $145K - $200K.
- 15% target bonus.
