Success will include significant collaboration with EE, Product Management and Product Design Teams. If you enjoy working in a collaborative environment and are looking to support a dynamic team, this might be the role for you! This role will report to our Senior Engineer., Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to define requirements, develop architectures, and plan sprints
- Generate firmware from development through to evaluation and validation of programs/systems for new and existing products, ensuring adherence to applicable industry and business standards
- Develop and monitor project timelines, ensuring projects are completed on time and within cost objectives and in accordance with client and company objectives
- Communicate work progress and design details to product development teams
- Conduct and participate in product design reviews to provide technical feedback on product designs and quality
- Conduct firmware unit tests to exercise the code’s implemented functionality and utilize it to debug circuits
- Document your firmware designs in a clear way that allows for collaboration across team members and geographies
- Implement and maintain firmware industry-accepted standards for revision control and firmware maintenance
- Additional duties and overtime as required
Things You Know How To Do:
-
Firmware Architecture & Development * Design, implement, and maintain production-grade firmware for microcontroller-based IoT devices, primarily targeting Nordic Semiconductor nRF52-series SoCs running Zephyr RTOS / Nordic Connect SDK (NCS). * Develop and integrate firmware modules including application state machines (SMF), sensor drivers, peripheral managers (GPIO, ADC, SPI, I2C, UART, USB CDC), and NVM/EEPROM configuration stores. * Implement low-power firmware strategies: tickless idle, system off, wakeup from GPIO/RTC, accurate battery-voltage monitoring via ADC. * Port and adapt firmware across microcontroller families including Atmel/Microchip AVR & SAM, Nordic nRF52/nRF53, Texas Instruments CC-series, and Raspberry Pi RP2040. * Develop firmware for Raspberry Pi (Linux-based) edge nodes, including Python and C daemons, I2C/SPI userspace drivers, and systemd service management.
-
Wireless Protocol Integration * Integrate and debug LoRaWAN stacks (Class A/C) using the LoRa Radio Driver and LoRaWAN stack available in Zephyr RTOS; configure regional parameters (EU868, US915, AU915), ADR, and MAC command handling. * Provision and manage LoRaWAN devices on cloud network servers including AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN: configure Device Profiles, Service Profiles, and destination rules; send/receive confirmed and unconfirmed downlink frames. * Integrate GPS/GNSS modules (UART NMEA and binary protocols) for location tracking; implement time-of-fix optimization and cold/warm/hot start handling. * Develop and debug BLE firmware using Zephyr’s BLE stack: GAP advertising/scanning, GATT server/client, custom service and characteristic definitions, MCUmgr DFU over BLE (SMP protocol). * Integrate Wi-Fi, RFID/NFC (PN5180 and ISO 15693/14443 protocols), and additional RF peripherals as product requirements dictate.
-
Hardware Bring-Up & Driver Development * Perform hardware bring-up on newly fabricated PCBs: power sequencing validation, clock configuration, peripheral initialization, and first-boot diagnostics. * Review schematic and layout files; collaborate with EE team to identify firmware-visible hardware issues such as pull-up values, signal integrity concerns, and peripheral address conflicts.
-
Cross-Functional Hardware Debug * Work side-by-side with electrical engineers to diagnose and resolve hardware/firmware integration issues, including power consumption anomalies, bus communication failures, and RF performance problems. * Operate and interpret results from standard bench instruments: digital oscilloscopes, logic analyzers (Saleae/Protocol Analyzers), bench power supplies, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and RF test equipment. * Capture and analyze SPI, I2C, UART, and LoRa/BLE air-interface traffic to validate protocol compliance and identify timing or framing errors. * Use J-Link / nRF9160-DK debug probes and Segger RTT / GDB for real-time firmware debugging and memory inspection.
-
Testing, QA & Production Support * Write unit tests and integration tests using Zephyr’s Twister test framework; automate regression testing in CI/CD pipelines. * Support assembly and rework operations: through-hole and SMD soldering, wire harness fabrication, conformal coating inspection, and rework of BGA/QFN components under microscope. * Document test procedures, pass/fail criteria, and field failure analyses in engineering records systems.
-
Rapid Prototyping & Research * Build functional IoT prototypes rapidly using development boards (nRF52840-DK, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP32) to prove concepts before committing to custom PCB design. * Research and evaluate new MCUs, sensors, wireless modules, and cloud connectivity services; produce written component comparison reports with firmware complexity assessments. * Develop GUI tooling and internal utilities (Python, PyQt, HTML/JS) to assist QA, field technicians, and manufacturing - such as downlink command builders, provisioning dashboards, and device log viewers. * Support cloud-side integration: AWS IoT Core rules, Lambda functions, and MQTT broker configurations related to device fleet management and OTA update delivery.
-
Lab Organization & Documentation * Maintain firmware source repositories with clear branching strategy, commit hygiene, and version tagging aligned to hardware revisions. * Write and maintain firmware architecture documents, peripheral interface specifications, bring-up guides, and production programming SOPs. * Organize and maintain the electronics lab workspace: component inventory, test fixture storage, ESD precautions, and calibration schedules for bench instruments. * Source and evaluate electronic components and modules; conduct market searches for alternatives when parts are end-of-life or unavailable.
Requirements
Do you have experience in Technical writing?, Do you have a Bachelor of Science?, * Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in embedded systems firmware space, with significant periods focused on the development of consumer electronics, real-time control systems, and motor control systems
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or similar
- You are a creative person that delivers innovative solutions from concept to production
- Highly motivated and self-starting with strong attention to detail and impeccable organizational skills
- Demonstrated portfolio of shipped or prototype IoT/embedded products (GitHub repos, senior design projects, or professional references)
- Good working knowledge of electronics testing tools, components, and lab safety practices
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout review (Altium, KiCad, Eagle, or similar)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to document technical work clearly, Ability to work remote some of the time. This is a paid full-time position in Cresskill, NJ (Location is accessible within walking distance of public transportation). Candidates are expected to work for at least 40 hours per week., * Embedded software: 3 years (Preferred)
