Job description

EC2 Managed AWS Geographic Expansion is the team responsible for building one of Earth’s largest distributed systems - AWS - at scale. We own the software and tooling to automate building the foundation of the cloud in new Regions and Availability zones.

As a manager on this team, you will lead a group of engineers who build and maintain these tools. You will help your team decide what to work on, remove obstacles, and grow their careers. You will work with partner teams across Amazon to understand what builders need and make sure your team focuses on problems that matter. You will also use the latest AI technologies to innovate in this space.

This role requires someone who can balance people management with technical depth. You need to understand the systems your team builds well enough to help with technical decisions, while also focusing on hiring, coaching, and career development for your engineers.

Key job responsibilities You will hire, coach, and develop a team of software engineers. You will help engineers grow their skills through regular feedback, project assignments, and mentorship. You will work with your team to set priorities and decide what to build. You will partner with product managers, other engineering teams, and stakeholders to understand requirements and coordinate work. You will remove obstacles that slow your team down. You will stay connected to the technical work, reviewing designs and code when helpful. You will track your team’s progress and communicate status to leadership. You will foster an environment where engineers feel comfortable asking questions and raising concerns. You will handle the administrative parts of management like performance reviews, hiring, and resource planning.

A day in the life Your day might start with a standup where you hear updates from your team on their current work. You might spend time reviewing a design document for a new feature, giving feedback on the approach. You could have a one-on-one with an engineer to discuss their career goals and help them identify projects that would help them grow. You could spend time looking at metrics to understand how our tools are being used and where engineers are running into problems.
