Job description

Within Azure Data, the Database team builds and maintains Microsoft’s operational database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

We are the Azure SQL DatabaseStorage/IO resource governance team, part of the Microsoft Azure’s C+ AI organization.

Our team is responsible to ensure high efficiency of operations while interacting with storage which persists with the data. We govern the IO resources available to our customers ensuring we optimize the performance of their workload while also ensuring equitable and fair distribution of these resources across different customers, hardware, offerings, etc. In addition to maintaining an efficient Quality of Service (QoS) with respectto latency and bandwidth, the team is also responsible for ensuring the customer gets the right kind of storage medium based on their need and historical usage pattern. Based on the customer needs, the team is responsible for putting them on the right tier of storage, moving them across to a different storage medium if desired with minimal downtime, analyze and rectify customer workload for efficient storage utilization.

Azure SQL has more than 100 million databases under its belt, and for its efficient operation has an even higher number of storage resources allocated. The team is responsible for reliable functioning of storage on all parameters and for all services. At your disposal will be SQL’s state-of-the-art management system, a sophisticated engine, and terabytes of telemetry to make informed decisions.

You have an opportunity to work on these technologies (Azure SQL Database, SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines) with a focus on driving product performance and reducing total cost of ownership.

Responsibilities include contributions to one or more of the followings:

  • Learn to review and break down work items into tasks with stakeholder collaboration, provide estimations, and escalate delays, while also supporting feature deployments to customers, considering user and service impacts, and adhering to best deployment practices for safety.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define feature requirements, integrate feedback to enhance design, and establish feedback loops for continuous improvement based on customer metrics.
  • Learn and apply coding standards and best practices through code reviews, developing maintainable and extensible code with guidance.
  • Utilize debugging tools to proactively and reactively address issues in product features, ensuring code quality and reliability.
  • Support the identification of dependencies and design documentation for product features, learn about system interactions and back-end dependencies, and contribute to architectural processes under guidance.
  • Produce code to test hypotheses for technical solutions and assist with technical validation efforts.
  • Collaborate on quality assurance plans, augment test cases, and integrate automation into testing, while understanding the implications of security and compliance in system architecture.
  • Contribute to data analysis and feedback integration for product engineering decisions, acting as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for monitoring and restoring system functionality within Service Level Agreement (SLA) timeframe.
  • Participate in live service operations, and support telemetry data integration for system behavior insights, with a focus on performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Provide a monthly (or bi-weekly) presentation to key-stakeholders with respect totheprogress/new-findings/statusof assigneddeliverables., Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.

Requirements

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Abilityto meet Microsoft,customerand/or government security screening requirements arerequiredfor this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter., * Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience building and shipping production grade software or services.
  • 2+ years of experience designing, implementing, and shipping cloud services or software products in a production environment.
