Job description

More than 430 million people worldwide use SmartThings to control and manage their connected life. SmartThings delivers simple, powerful experiences across Samsung’s leading portfolio of phones, TVs, and appliances. We also offer the most versatile smart home experience as an open platform with a rich partner ecosystem (think IKEA, SONOS, Honeywell, and so many more). As a founding member of Matter, we are a leader in the industry to help make smart homes more secure, reliable and seamless to use. Come be a part of the leading edge of IoT innovation! As a Senior Software Engineer on the Apps & Behaviors Services team, you’ll take ownership of complex features and technical challenges within the platform powering SmartApps and Rules & Automations across the SmartThings ecosystem. You’ll act as a technical lead - decomposing ambiguous problems, driving solutions from design through delivery, and identifying gaps where the platform can be made more scalable and reliable. Alongside your own contributions, you’ll mentor other engineers and help raise the technical bar across the team. This role is hybrid, 3 days/week in our Minneapolis Office (on iconic St Anthony Main across from Downtown…with attached parking at no cost to you!) The pay range for this role is $117,000 to $158,000, with an annual bonus target of 20%., In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Act as the technical lead for complex features and initiatives within the Apps & Behaviors Platform (the systems powering SmartApp and Rules & Automations execution) independently decomposing ambiguous requirements into clear, executable plans.
  • Apply strong working knowledge of AWS infrastructure to design and build scalable, reliable components, following AWS Well-Architected best practices.
  • Adopt AI-assisted engineering practices in your own workflow and help teammates apply them to speed up debugging, testing, triage, and delivery.
  • Own your features end-to-end - from application code through the infrastructure and release changes they require - improving the reliability, maintainability, and observability of the systems you touch.
  • Identify gaps in existing solutions and propose more effective technical approaches to improve efficiency and scalability.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, meaningfully contributing to their growth., Job Summary As a technical leader within the Concrete service line, the Engineer 3 serves as a mentor to junior staff, supports QA/QC oversight, and drives continuous improvement…
  • 5 days ago

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful exposure to distributed systems and high-traffic cloud environments.
  • Solid proficiency with core AWS services (EC2, Aurora RDS, DynamoDB, API Gateway) and a working knowledge of the AWS Well-Architected Framework.
  • A track record of independently owning and delivering complex, ambiguous projects with minimal oversight, and clearly communicating technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You treat uptime and operational resilience as core design considerations, building in graceful degradation and fault tolerance rather than reacting after instability hits production.
  • A security-conscious approach to design. You consider security implications early rather than as a late-sprint checklist item.

Desired Skills

  • Experience with JVM-based service frameworks such as Dropwizard and Ratpack, and comfort working across Java, Kotlin, and Groovy within the same platform.
  • Exposure to systems-level languages like Rust, particularly where logic is shared across cloud and embedded/hub runtimes
  • Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures using AWS Kinesis, SQS, and SNS for asynchronous processing and eventual consistency across services.
  • Familiarity with AWS data stores - DynamoDB, Aurora/MySQL, and caching layers like Memcached or Redis - and the trade-offs between them.
  • Experience building resilient service-to-service communication using circuit breakers, retries, and bulkheads (e.g., resilience4j).
  • Experience with progressive delivery practices - feature flagging (e.g., LaunchDarkly) and canary/staged rollouts.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Atlantis) and configuration management for EC2-based fleets (Ansible).

Benefits & conditions

  • We offer an attractive compensation package with comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and mental health; an HSA with employer contribution; life & disability insurance; FSAs for health and dependent care expenses; a competitive 401k with a 5% employer match, and more.
  • All of our employees enjoy unlimited PTO, 12 paid holidays, and a generous parental leave policy (8 weeks fully paid parental leave and 8 more fully paid weeks for childbirth recovery leave).
  • Eligible employees benefit from our education reimbursement program, and all employees enjoy access to learning resources through O’Reilly.
  • Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging is embedded into our culture and our work, and everyone has frequent opportunities to join forums and groups and participate in ongoing projects.
  • We offer a parking stipend to cover the monthly garage cost. EV chargers are also onsite.
  • In-office catered lunches on Thursdays.
  • Access to the onsite gym.

Base compensation range for this position is $117,000 to $158,000. Actual base within this range will depend on many factors including experience, skills, technical expertise and market alignment. In addition, this role is eligible for a 20% annual target bonus based heavily on individual performance. At SmartThings, we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all. If you require accommodations to participate in our hiring process or to perform the requirements of the job, we will work with you to meet your needs in compliance with applicable laws. Please reach out to and a member of our Talent Acquisition team will connect with you further!
