Job description

The DevOps Engineer III (Cloud Platform Engineer III) is a senior level technical contributor responsible for the development, automation, and maintenance of the organization’s multi-cloud ecosystem. This role focuses on refactoring legacy infrastructure into resilient, standardized Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) to eliminate single points of failure and operational drag. The candidate participates in architectural and design decisions while contributing as a primary technical resource for Terraform, CloudFormation, and cloud-native services. Working closely with development, security, and networking teams, the DevOps Engineer III implements complex production environments across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The focus is on driving scalability through high-level automation-transitioning from manual intake to self-service orchestration-while ensuring strict adherence to global security, IAM governance, and compliance standards. This position follows agile workflows and delivery timelines. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.

As a patient-focused organization, University of Utah Health exists to enhance the health and well-being of people through patient care, research and education. Success in this mission requires a culture of collaboration, excellence, leadership, and respect. University of Utah Health seeks staff that are committed to the values of compassion, collaboration, innovation, responsibility, integrity, quality and trust that are integral to our mission. EO/AA

Corporate Overview: The University of Utah is a Level 1 Trauma Center and is nationally ranked and recognized for our academic research, quality standards and overall patient experience. Our five hospitals and eleven clinics provide excellence in our comprehensive services, medical advancement, and overall patient outcomes

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) Development: Contributes advanced development and refactoring of Terraform and CloudFormation codebases. Develops reusable modules and standardized network patterns to ensure infrastructure parity across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

REST API Development & Integration: Designs and develops custom code to interface with REST APIs for cloud service providers and internal platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, GitHub, BeyondTrust). This includes creating automated middleware or scripts to facilitate data exchange and trigger complex orchestration workflows.

Cloud Orchestration & Self-Service: Contributes to the design and implementation of automated cloud provisioning workflows by integrating ServiceNow, GitHub Actions, Ansible and Terraform Cloud via IaC and pipelines to replace manual processes.

Multi-Cloud Platform Stewardship: Implements logging, monitoring, and observability solutions in Azure and Google Cloud Platform to align with established AWS enterprise standards via IaC.

Configuration Management: Develops and maintains “configuration as code” using Ansible to automate system roles, patching, and the onboarding of development teams into cloud-native environments.

Modernization & POCs: Executes proof-of-concept (POC) initiatives for modernizing legacy infrastructure with modern cloud technologies and enterprise AI infrastructure.

Tooling Lifecycle Management: Manages the governance, maintenance, and updates for core cloud and IaC technologies. Investigates and recommends new technologies that modernize and increase the efficiency of the organization.

Team Enablement & Redundancy: Provides senior-level technical oversight and redundancy for critical cloud systems. Supports and mentors DevOps I and II engineers. Leads and contributes to internal Communities of Practice.

Security & Compliance Implementation: Implements IAM roles, security groups, and baseline security controls, supporting CIS hardening and compliance requirements through automated configuration and policy enforcement.

Observability & Operational Support: Develops, configures, and supports logging and monitoring solutions across “hybrid cloud” infrastructure, including AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform to maintain visibility into platform health, automation outcomes, and system performance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate and consult with cross-functional teams and external service providers (e.g., AWS, Red Hat) on cloud-related initiatives, providing technical expertise to deliver secure, scalable, and efficient solutions while supporting outage resolution and service request management.

Requirements

Expert Multi-Cloud Proficiency: Expert-level skill in administering and configuring a hybrid multi-cloud enterprise environment.

Terraform Expertise: Advanced proficiency in writing, refactoring, and managing Terraform code at scale, including experience with Terraform Cloud and GitHub integration. Follows an IaC first approach.

AWS CloudFormation: Deep understanding and experience with AWS CloudFormation templates for infrastructure deployment is highly desirable.

Software Development Skills: Proficiency in Python with working knowledge of one or more of the following: JavaScript/TypeScript, Bash, and PowerShell for building automation, integrations, and platform tooling.

REST API Development: Strong knowledge of RESTful API principles and experience developing scripts or applications that consume and interact with web services to automate cross-platform tasks.

Cloud Networking Knowledge: Strong understanding and debugging of cloud networking, including virtual networks, VPN tunnels, routing tables, direct connect tunnels, network security groups.

Cloud Security & IAM: Deep understanding of cloud security principles, specifically IAM policy construction, secret management, automated compliance hardening (CIS), networking controls, and security best practices.

Automation & CI/CD: Proficiency in building and maintaining complex CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and integrating them with ITSM tools like ServiceNow.

Configuration Management: Experience with Ansible, specifically applying a “configuration as code” philosophy.

Enterprise Platform Integration: Experience integrating cloud platforms with enterprise tools such as ServiceNow, CMDBs, databases, and internal automation systems.

AI & Automation Concepts: Working knowledge of AI concepts and prompt engineering, with the ability to incorporate AI-driven capabilities into cloud and automation workflows.

Workload & Priority Management: Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while delivering high-quality, maintainable solutions., Required
