Job description

We are seeking a Director of Critical Utilities and Facility Management to join our Facilities and Engineering team, supporting our campus Central Utility Plant and MEP operations in an on-site work model. In this role, you will safeguard the reliability, safety, and compliance of our electricity, chilled water, steam, and emergency power systems, ensuring uninterrupted service for 24/7 research and operational needs while collaborating with Engineering, EH&S, and Business Resilience teams.

Discover your role:

  • Develop and implement long-term operational strategies for Critical Utilities and Facilities Maintenance programs across a complex pharmaceutical/biotech campus.
  • Lead organizational development efforts, including team structure design, workforce planning, and operational model optimization across internal staff and outsourced providers.
  • Establish and continuously improve maintenance, reliability, and capital planning programs to strengthen system performance, resiliency, and compliance.
  • Provide executive oversight of Central Utility Plant and Powerhouse operations, partnering with operational leadership to ensure safe, uninterrupted utility delivery.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, R&D Operations, EH&S, Quality, Procurement, and Capital Projects teams to support infrastructure initiatives and campus growth.
  • Drive governance, performance management, and strategic vendor oversight, including metrics development, operational reviews, budget planning, and risk mitigation., * Communicating clearly with researchers, engineers, and executives, and being flexible with travel
  • Motivating and coordinating a mixed team of internal technicians, union trades, and third-party providers.
  • Balancing hands-on problem solving with strategic planning, budgeting, and long-range asset management.
  • Keeping utility plants, chillers, boilers, and generators running with zero unplanned downtime.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Power, Marine, or Energy Engineering, or 15 years of equivalent experience (Navy Nuclear Power School plus 10 years accepted).
  • 10+ years leading central utility or power-plant operations (chilled water, steam, emergency power) within a hybrid facility management model, plus strong contract-management and vendor-governance skills.
  • Proficiency with building automation system (BAS) platforms, such as Metasys, EcoStruxure, or Desigo.
  • Proven team-leadership abilities across internal staff and outsourced providers.
  • A valid NYS driver’s license to support up to 25% travel.
  • Turning maintenance data into actionable reliability improvements.
