Job description

We are looking for an experienced AWS Platform/DevOps Engineer to join a major UK Government digital transformation programme., The successful candidate will work closely with development, infrastructure, security, architecture and delivery teams to build reliable, secure and highly automated AWS platforms., * Design, build and maintain secure, scalable and highly available AWS infrastructure, following cloud engineering and security best practices.

  • Bring an automation-first approach to infrastructure provisioning, configuration and software deployment.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, with experience of VM provisioning tools such as Vagrant.
  • Work across AWS services including EC2, ECS, RDS, ELB, EBS, EFS, S3, IAM, CloudWatch, KMS, SSM and HSM.
  • Design and support AWS networking including VPC, NACLs, Route 53, Transit Gateway and VIFs.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Groovy, supporting automated build, deployment and release processes.
  • Work with Docker containers and Amazon Linux 2023 within cloud and platform environments.
  • Implement and support monitoring and observability using Grafana, Prometheus, Alert Manager, Node Exporter and CloudWatch.
  • Configure and support infrastructure services including OpenLDAP, Nginx, Squid Proxy, Postfix SMTP and Dovecot IMAP, including secure mTLS configurations where required.
  • Troubleshoot complex AWS infrastructure, application deployment and production issues, taking ownership from investigation through to resolution.
  • Support incidents, technology changes and escalations within a 24x7 operational environment, maintaining platform availability and reliability.
  • Use Git, Jira, Confluence and ServiceNow across development, incident, problem and change-management activities.
  • Support infrastructure security activities including Nessus scanning, ClamAV and Microsoft Defender.
  • Work collaboratively with development, infrastructure, security and other technical teams to continuously improve DevOps automation, platform reliability and engineering practices.
  • Communicate effectively with technical stakeholders, architects, suppliers, end users and delivery teams.

Requirements

This is a hands-on engineering role focused on AWS cloud infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, automation, CI/CD, networking, Linux, containers, monitoring, security and 24x7 production support. The role requires strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to take ownership of complex infrastructure and application deployment issues through to resolution., * 10+ years of hands-on AWS experience across cloud infrastructure, networking, security and automation.

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS Platform/DevOps engineering.
  • Strong Terraform/Infrastructure as Code experience.
  • Strong experience with Jenkins and Groovy-based CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting skills, particularly Amazon Linux.
  • Experience with Docker and containerised environments.
  • Strong understanding of AWS networking, including VPC, NACLs, Route 53, Transit Gateway and VIFs.
  • Experience with AWS monitoring, logging and observability.
  • Experience supporting 24x7 production environments and complex technical incidents.
  • Strong understanding of security, authentication, certificates and mTLS.
  • Ability to work effectively with developers, architects, infrastructure and security teams.

Desirable Skills

  • PostgreSQL/Aurora DBA experience, including SQL performance tuning and database configuration.
  • Experience with Jaspersoft.
  • Experience with Proxmox and Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Windows Server, GPO, WSUS and DFS Replication.
  • Experience with Firewall and switch configuration.
  • Experience with patch management.
  • Good understanding of DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, SSH, FTP and SMTP.
  • Experience implementing and supporting COTS products.
  • AWS or Azure certification.
  • Previous experience delivering DevOps/cloud solutions within UK Government, Central Government or other highly secure environments.
