Job description

The Backend Developer is a hands-on software engineering role within the Digital team, contributing to the delivery of secure, maintainable cloud services and APIs across OrganOx digital platforms. Aligned with Terumo values of integrity, collaboration, respect, and contribution to society through healthcare, the role supports regulated medical device and data solutions developed within OrganOx quality and software lifecycle processes.

Working closely with internal stakeholders and external development partners, the Backend Developer designs, develops, tests, documents, and maintains server-side applications, APIs, databases, and cloud-based services that underpin OrganOx digital products and have a direct impact on clinical outcomes.

This is an on site position in Oxford with flexibility.

Listed below are the major responsibilities of the role and a brief description of some of the key tasks to be performed. This list is not totally exhaustive.

Major Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable back-end services, APIs, integration platforms, databases, and Microsoft Azure cloud-native solutions to deliver defined requirements across regulated and non-regulated digital projects.
  • Work with relational and non-relational database technologies to support business and product requirements.
  • Develop automation including build pipelines, DevOps workflows, infrastructure-as-code, and business process automation, using source control, code review systems, and modern development tooling to maintain code quality and consistency.
  • Develop unit, integration, and automated tests and contribute to verification evidence, code quality, and design reviews.
  • Participate in daily stand-ups, design reviews, and collaborative team activities with internal and external teams, supporting Product Owners and Business Analysts in refining requirements and technical specifications.
  • Ensure developments are completed on time and in accordance with agreed quality, regulatory, cybersecurity, and data protection expectations.
  • Contribute to technical and architecture documentation, traceability, risk controls, and quality records.
  • Support the monitoring, troubleshooting, optimisation, and controlled release of production systems.
  • Develop a strong understanding of OrganOx products and their impact on the business and on patients’ lives.
  • Adhere to the letter and spirit of OrganOx’s Code of Conduct and all other company policies.

Requirements

  • Professional experience as a software engineer within a commercial delivery team, with current and relevant back-end development skills.
  • Strong back-end development experience centred on Microsoft technologies and platforms, including C#, .NET, SQL Server, and Azure.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Strong knowledge of database design, optimisation, performance tuning, and data modelling.
  • Solid understanding of cloud technologies, secure API design, application security, networking concepts, authentication, authorisation, and API-based architectures.
  • Experience with DevOps practices including source control, configuration management, build pipelines, continuous integration, and continuous deployment.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices including Clean Code, SOLID principles, automated testing, and continuous integration.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new technologies and develop robust solutions.
  • Strong communication and team-working skills.
  • High attention to detail and concern for quality of work.
  • Experience working with containerisation technologies such as Docker and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes (desirable)
  • Comfortable working within Agile development approaches and controlled software lifecycle processes, ideally in regulated medical device or healthcare environments (desirable)
  • Experience developing software within a regulated environment, including awareness of quality system requirements, software lifecycle controls, traceability, verification, validation, and software risk management (desirable)
  • Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging technologies, IoT platforms, telemetry, or scientific systems (desirable)
  • Additional experience with Linux, time-series data, data quality, data analytics, or business intelligence (desirable), * Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or another STEM related subject, or equivalent experience
