Job description

As a senior engineer, you will help design, build, and safeguard the quality of applications across the GM’s Product Validation, Safety & Quality IT (PVSQ) organization, which spans regulatory compliance, safety systems, and quality engineering used across vehicle programs. Depending on your strengths, you may lean toward building end-to-end features across the stack (Quarkus or Spring Boot services, a Next.js/React portal, a relational database, and a Databricks lakehouse) or toward the test automation and quality engineering that keep those systems reliable.

You will have the opportunity to work hands-on writing software or solutions, based on detailed requirements and system specifications. Using sound, repeatable, industry standard methodologies, you will support the PVSQ organization responsible for developing Nextgen applications. As part of development activities, we will update existing software and/or develop new software solutions to target specific business obstacles. A repeatable, systematic, and quantifiable approach to the development process will also be applied along with the use of appropriate methodologies.

As a coach/mentor, you will provide feedback on the software being developed to software developers. Ensure code alignment with design patterns/frameworks by working closely with architects and data scientists.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design and maintain back-end microservices in Java (Quarkus or Spring Boot), exposing both REST and GraphQL APIs with well-defined, versioned contracts and shared DTOs.
  • Build responsive front-end features in the Next.js / React portal using TypeScript and Apollo for GraphQL data access.
  • Develop and support Databricks data workflows (Unity Catalog, Delta tables, and the medallion pattern) that feed regulatory reporting and dashboards.
  • Evolve the transactional relational schema (PostgreSQL or Oracle) safely, writing versioned Liquibase changesets that ship through the same pipeline as application code.
  • Produce clean, well-documented, testable code that aligns with the team’s design patterns, frameworks, and standards.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests (TestNG, Selenium, cross-browser via BrowserStack) that gate every release.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across services, the portal, and data pipelines, using observability tooling (Datadog / App Insights).
  • Work within the CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions, security scanning, promotion dev test prod) and help keep main releasable at all times.
  • Translate business and regulatory requirements into executable development work: break them down, shape the technical approach, and drive it through to delivery in partnership with stakeholders and BAs.
  • Lead and drive software design for scalability and reusability across the full stack, from the UI down to the database structure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years building and shipping production software, with strong recent depth in Java / JVM (Quarkus or Spring Boot).
  • Demonstrated full-stack capability: comfortable owning a feature from a Next.js / React / TypeScript front end through a Java service to the data layer, not backend-only.
  • Proven ability to take a business requirement all the way to running software: owning the end-to-end design (UI through service to database structure) with scalability and reusability in mind, rather than only implementing predefined tickets.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating RESTful and GraphQL APIs, including contract/versioning discipline and API security best practices.
  • Solid experience with a relational database (PostgreSQL or Oracle) behind transactional services, using an ORM (Hibernate / JPA, ideally Quarkus Panache), and managing schema changes with a migration tool (Liquibase).
  • Working knowledge of data-lakehouse platforms for the analytical/reporting side (Databricks / Delta / Unity Catalog strongly preferred); ability to reason about data models, lineage, and access control.
  • Experience deploying and running services on Azure: containers (Docker), Kubernetes (AKS), and container registries.
  • Fluency with Git and GitHub-based CI/CD (GitHub Actions or equivalent): automated build, test, security scanning, and promotion pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for provisioning and configuration.
  • Comfort defining and upholding technical/operational metadata standards, data-movement patterns, and ETL/ELT best practices.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the SDLC and experience in Agile / Scrum environments.

People Skills

  • Proven ability to lead development initiatives and drive design decisions, planning and executing deliverables within a collaborative team.
  • Independent, self-driven, and quick to learn, with strong, thorough problem-solving.
  • Highly organized and effective at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication; able to translate regulatory and stakeholder requirements into actionable technical work and engage clearly with diverse audiences.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge

  • Experience with Apache Spark and large-scale data processing on Databricks (DBX job orchestration).
  • Familiarity with change-data-capture patterns and tooling (e.g., HVR) feeding a medallion lakehouse.
  • Experience with GHAS (code/secret/dependency scanning), Wiz (container scanning), Dependabot, and secure-SDLC practices.
  • Experience with feature-flagged, trunk-based delivery and one-button/continuous release models.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., Copilot, Cursor) and grounding agents with repo context (AGENTS.md / cross-service dependency maps).
  • Background in regulated or compliance-driven domains where auditability and reporting deadlines are first-class concerns.
  • Experience with observability platforms (Datadog, Azure Application Insights)., Access Control, Agile Programming Methodologies, Analysis Skills, Apache Spark, Application Programming Interface (API), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Best Practices, Change Management, Cisco Unity, Coaching, Code Reviews, Computer Science, DTOS, Data Collection, Data Management, Data Modeling, Data Processing, Data Science, Database Extract Transform and Load (ETL), Design Patterns Programming Methodologies, GraphQL, Hibernate, Identify Issues, Industry Standards, Interpersonal Skills, Java, Java Persistence API (JPA), Leadership, Machine Tool, Maintain Compliance, Mentoring, Metadata, Microservices, Multitasking, Object Relational Mapping (ORM), Oracle, Organizational Skills, PostgreSQL, Presentation/Verbal Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Process Improvement, Product Development, Product Safety, Product Testing, Quality Engineering, REST (Representational State Transfer), React.js, Regulations, Regulatory Compliance, Regulatory Reports, Regulatory Requirements, Relational Databases (RDBMS), Reporting Dashboards, Safety Systems, Scrum Project Management and Software Development, Selenium, Software Administration, Software Design, Software Development, Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Team Player, Test Automation, Time Management, User Interface Design, User Interface/Experience (UI/UX), Web Browsers
