Job description
We are seeking a senior-level Systems Administrator 5 to join our team supporting Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News, VA. In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for the high-level architecture, maintenance, security, and optimization of large-scale, enterprise IT infrastructure. As a Level 5 administrator, you will serve as a subject matter expert handling critical system configurations, infrastructure modernization projects, and Tier 3/4 escalation support., Architect, deploy, maintain, and upgrade physical and virtual server environments across enterprise networks. Lead the implementation and lifecycle management of core infrastructure services (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and Identity Management). Drive automation initiatives using PowerShell, Bash, or Python to streamline system configuration, provisioning, and patching cycles. Monitor system performance, resource utilization, and reliability; execute proactive capacity planning and remediation. Oversee enterprise backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure maximum system availability. Enforce baseline security configurations, vulnerability management protocols, and patch compliance in accordance with industry best practices. Provide advanced technical guidance and mentor junior IT support teams on complex operational and engineering challenges.
Requirements
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field plus 9+ years of progressive systems administration experience (or a Master’s degree with 7+ years, or High School Diploma/equivalent with 13+ years). Extensive hands-on experience managing enterprise Windows and/or Linux server environments at scale. Deep technical expertise in virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere/ESXi or Hyper-V) and enterprise storage solutions (SAN/NAS). Strong track record of scripting and automation (PowerShell, Bash, or configuration management tools like Ansible). Demonstrated experience with enterprise monitoring, logging, and performance diagnostic tools., Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, MCSE, VMware VCP, Red Hat RHCSA/RHCE, CompTIA Security+). Prior experience working within hybrid cloud architectures (AWS, Azure, or hybrid on-premises environments). Familiarity with ITIL framework practices and enterprise ticketing/incident management systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical architectures to non-technical stakeholders. Work Environment & Physical Demands Model: Hybrid (blend of on-site work in Newport News, VA and remote flexibility). Standard business hours with occasional off-hours support for scheduled maintenance windows or critical system incidents.
