The Role: Senior Java Backend Engineer Hoofddorp - pioneer the platform and make it

As Senior Java Backend Engineer Hoofddorp you’ll join at a stage where much is still to be defined. The backend is being built with Java 21 and Micronaut in a modern, containerised cloud setup, and you’ll get the chance to co-create the standards, architecture and roadmap.

You get to design and build from scratch their platform that customers will use as their single control center: to monitor devices, configure products, manage prices, run promotions, control lighting and ensure everything operates smoothly 24/7. Your work will directly shape how clients interact with and rely on the system worldwide.

Your challenges will include:

• Designing event-driven services to process continuous real-time data streams from thousands (and future millions) of connected devices worldwide.
• Building APIs that empower customers to control, monitor and configure their devices and product portfolio.
• Creating a system that is scalable, secure and fault-tolerant, supporting 24/7 availability.
• Migrating and consolidating functionality from acquired systems into one unified global platform.
• Helping shape the engineering culture: coding standards, DevOps practices, and even deciding which technologies and conferences the team should invest in.

• 5+ years of professional backend experience with Java.
• Strong with Java 11+ (ideally 17/21) and modern frameworks (Micronaut, Spring Boot).
• Solid communicator, you enjoy working closely with business
• Proven experience with event-driven architectures, messaging, API-first design.
• Solid knowledge of cloud environments (private or public), Docker, CI/CD, monitoring.
• Pragmatic engineer who values clean code, testing, reliability and scalability.
• Comfortable in a fast-moving scale-up environment.
• An EU passport: unfortunately they are not able to sponsor visa’s for non-EU nationals
• Bonus: IoT, distributed systems, or mentoring experience.
