Job description

This role is a hands-on Principal Software Engineer embedded in a small, cross-functional squad focused on testing new business strategies.

The Principal Software Engineer will drive both technical execution and day-to-day squad leadership, partnering closely with Product and Delivery. While not a formal people manager, this role functions as the de facto technical leader for the squad, ensuring high-quality delivery and alignment with broader Product Engineering standards.

This is a build-first role - writing code daily, shipping quickly, and enabling the team to experiment, learn, and iterate at speed without creating long-term technical debt.

Hands-On Engineering (~60-70%)

  • Design, build, and ship full-stack features
  • Develop modern, responsive UIs
  • Build APIs and services on AWS serverless architecture
  • Define infrastructure using IaC
  • Lead by example in code quality

Technical Leadership & Delivery (~30-40%)

  • Lead a small squad through rapid experimentation
  • Translate business ideas into execution quickly
  • Own delivery and remove blockers
  • Align with Product and Delivery
  • Ensure alignment to engineering standards
  • Balance speed, scalability, and maintainability

Innovation & Experimentation

  • Enable fast iteration and testing of ideas
  • Leverage feature flags for safe experimentation
  • Encourage rapid prototyping
  • Manage technical debt proactively, * Reports to Sr Manager, Delivery
  • Technical leader within squad
  • Aligned to Jira, SDLC and platform standards
  • High autonomy within guardrails

How We Work

  • Small teams, rapid iteration
  • Continuous deployment
  • Feature flags and incremental rollout
  • Separation of experimentation and platform durability

Technology Tooling

The squad will operate within Tivity Health’s modern engineering tool set, using standardized platforms to support rapid experimentation, reliable delivery, measurable engineering performance, and strong operational visibility. The Principal Software Engineer is also expected to actively leverage approved AI capabilities throughout the software delivery lifecycle, including solution design, development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.

  • Frontend: React, Next.js, and TypeScript for modern, responsive, maintainable user experiences.
  • Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, AWS Lambda, and API Gateway for scalable serverless APIs and services.
  • Infrastructure: AWS Serverless services including Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, and EventBridge, with Pulumi used for infrastructure as code and repeatable environment management.
  • CI/CD and release management: GitLab CI/CD for build, test, security scanning, and deployment workflows, with LaunchDarkly feature flags supporting safe experimentation, progressive rollout, and controlled release practices.
  • Delivery management: Jira as the system of record for sprint planning, backlog management, work tracking, and delivery visibility.
  • Observability: Datadog for logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts, and production health monitoring.
  • Engineering metrics: Jellyfish for visibility into delivery performance, productivity, and alignment to business value.
  • AI-enabled engineering: Approved AI tools, including Copilot, Kiro, and other governed capabilities, should be used as a standard part of design, development, testing, code review preparation, documentation, debugging, and delivery acceleration.

Requirements

  • 5-7+ years of software engineering
  • Strong TypeScript / Node / frontend skills
  • Experience with AWS serverless
  • Leadership through execution
  • Ability to align business and tech
  • Strong communication skills
