As a Data Science Manager at National Grid, you’ll lead a high performing team while staying hands on - delivering impactful projects, building AI models, coding, and turning data into clear, actionable insights. You’ll work in a fast paced, collaborative environment where the challenges are varied, the problems are complex, and the work directly supports the energy transition and the millions of people who rely on us every day.

Our Data Science teams transform diverse data sources into meaningful intelligence that drives decision making across the organisation. Success in this role means working cross functionally, thriving in agile teams, and bringing strong skills in:

  • Statistical and probabilistic analysis
  • Programming and software development
  • Data visualisation and clear communication

If you’re motivated by meaningful impact and enjoy solving complex problems with data, this role offers the opportunity to lead, innovate, and make a real difference.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and inspire a team of talented Data Scientists, helping them grow their skills while driving high impact work across the organisation.
  • Build advanced analytics and AI solutions using machine learning, statistical modelling, forecasting, and simulation techniques to solve complex, real world challenges.
  • Unlock the power of data by bringing together information from multiple sources and formats, creating robust datasets that fuel insight and innovation.
  • Drive and deliver projects that span the entire enterprise - collaborating across the UK and US, and partnering with teams in Gas, Electric, and all major support functions.
  • Stay curious and keep pushing boundaries - we’re constantly exploring new ideas, new technologies, and new ways to shape the future of energy through data.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in Data Science, ideally with exposure to the utility or energy sector.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop Data Scientists, guiding teams to deliver high quality, impactful work.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, able to work effectively with end users, peers, and senior leaders.
  • A knack for making the complex simple, translating technical concepts into clear business insights and recommendations.
  • Fluency in Data Science techniques across statistics, machine learning, and GenAI.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, with the ability to build reliable, scalable solutions.
  • Experience working in cloud environments on Linux and/or Windows platforms (Azure experience is a plus)
  • A strong track record delivering the full lifecycle of Data Science products and projects.
  • Experience working within regulated utility environments.
  • Experimental design experience and a hypothesis driven mindset.
  • Familiarity with interactive visualisation tools (Power BI a plus).
  • Knowledge of GIS tools, such as ArcGIS

Benefits & conditions

  • Competitive Salary: £78,000 - £91,000 per annum (based on capability, and experience)
  • Annual performance incentive of up to 30% of eligible earnings

Additional benefits:

  • A competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
  • You will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance
  • Flexible benefits such as a cycle scheme, share incentive plan, technology schemes
  • Access to apps such as digital GP service for round the clock access to GP video consultations and NHS repeat prescriptions, wellbeing app to support your health and fitness
  • Access to Work + Family Space, providing support and resources for work and family life, including paid emergency childcare and eldercare
