Paid Student Developer Opportunity: OceanX Web Game Adaptations at OceanX
The role
We’re looking for Computer Science students to join an exciting collaboration between OceanX and the University of Bristol to develop web-based adaptations of immersive museum experiences originally exhibited at Singapore’s ArtScience Museum .
Working in a “for students, by students” model, you’ll contribute to real projects with the potential to reach classrooms, museums and festivals around the world.
This is a paid opportunity, with students employed and paid at the Real Living Wage.
Projects:
- Seagrass Stories - Extend and enhance an existing web prototype that teaches players about restoring fragile seagrass ecosystems.
- DataXplorer - Develop an interactive visualisation of real oceanographic data using modern web technologies (React/Vite + FastAPI).
Requirements:
- Experience developing games using Unreal Engine or Unity.
- Knowledge of C#, C++, Python, or other programming languages used in game or web development.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a small development team.
- Ability to prototype ideas quickly and adapt to changing project requirements.
- Technical art skills (e.g. shaders, VFX, animation, asset pipelines).
- Game design experience, including gameplay mechanics, UI/UX, player progression, and balancing.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and collaborative development workflows.
- Experience integrating APIs or working with JSON data.
- An interest in educational games, science communication, or interactive learning experiences.
- Experience working with data visualisation or interactive graphics (e.g. Canvas, WebGL, Three.js, D3.js).
- Understanding of user testing and iterative design based on player feedback.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with a willingness to learn new technologies.
