Job description
Warwickshire County Council is looking for a Data Engineer to help shape how data supports services, communities and decision-making at a time of major change for local government. As Warwickshire prepares for the creation of two new unitary authorities in April 2028, reliable, well-designed data pipelines, integrations and analytical platforms will be essential. This role sits at the heart of that work: maintaining the systems services rely on today while helping us modernise how we manage, join, share and use data for the future., At the same time, the role of a data engineer is evolving. Alongside maintaining and improving the data pipelines, databases and integrations on which our services rely, we are beginning to explore new ways of working. These include preparing for a future migration to Microsoft Fabric, making greater use of cloud-based data services, strengthening our use of Git, source control and modern development practices, and exploring how AI-assisted development can help us work more effectively., You may already be working in data engineering, but you could also be a recent graduate, an apprentice completing your training, or someone looking to move into data engineering from software development, analytics, GIS or another technical field., We recommend submitting your application as soon as possible. We don’t want to keep you waiting so we will be starting the initial shortlist and assessment process while the job advert is running. Please check your emails or applicant account via our jobs portal for any updates on your application
Requirements
We do not expect you to have experience of every technology we use. If you have practical experience of using a scripting or programming language, building or orchestrating data pipelines, or cleaning and transforming complex data, we encourage you to apply. Your experience may have been gained through employment, education, a placement, an apprenticeship or substantial project work. What matters most is that you can demonstrate sound technical foundations, an aptitude for solving data problems, a willingness to learn and the potential to develop quickly. In your application, please give us an example of a data or automation problem you have tackled, explain the approach and tools you used, and describe your own contribution. You will have flexibility in how and where you work, and the support of a friendly multidisciplinary team working across data engineering, property information and GIS., * The ability to extract, transform and query data using SQL, Python or other ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) tools
- The technical capacity to design and build M and DAX queries within Microsoft Power BI
- Experience of managing complex datasets within a recognised database environment (preferably PostgreSQL/PostGIS) and/or a cloud storage facility (such as a Lakehouse, Delta Lake or Data Lake solution)
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Experience of using GIS systems, such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, or QGIS
- Experience of using Git or another version-control system
Benefits & conditions
Your future matters to us, we provide a generous pension scheme which includes an employer contribution rate of typically around 19 percent per month, to help support your financial security during retirement.
