Job description

Are you an experienced Data Engineer looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in healthcare? At University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, we are seeking a talented and innovative Senior Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering Team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing and maintaining the Trust’s data infrastructure, supporting the delivery of high-quality information and reporting solutions that underpin patient care, operational performance, and strategic decision-making. Working closely with the Data Engineering Manager and Heads of Service, you will design, develop and support robust data warehouse solutions, data integrations, reporting systems and bespoke applications across one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country., As a Senior Data Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop, test and maintain data warehouse and reporting solutions.
  • Build and support complex data integrations, interfaces and information flows.
  • Develop solutions using Microsoft SQL Server technologies, including T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS and related development tools.
  • Support strategic digital transformation projects across the Trust.
  • Analyse business requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Ensure data quality, performance, security and resilience across critical systems.
  • Lead on problem-solving, root-cause analysis and service improvements.
  • Supervise and support junior members of the Data Engineering team.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical, operational and corporate teams to deliver innovative information solutions., Please note that if you currently work for another NHS Trust or UHSussex and you are applying to accept this position as a secondment opportunity, before applying you must seek agreement and authorisation from your current Trust/Manager. Requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification in a computing, mathematical or statistical discipline, or equivalent specialist experience.
  • Advanced expertise in T-SQL, SSIS and SSRS.
  • Extensive experience of relational databases, data analysis and information management.
  • Experience of data migrations, system integrations and data flow development.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Experience developing and testing applications, reporting solutions and information systems.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring or supporting junior colleagues.

Desirable

  • Experience working within the NHS or healthcare sector.
  • Knowledge of NHS information standards, information flows and the Federated Data Platform.
  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Power BI or cloud-based data platforms.
  • Knowledge of ASP.NET, XML, JavaScript or related technologies., * Postgraduate qualification in a computing, mathematical or statistical discipline, or possessing the equivalent knowledge through proven specialist experience acquired through training and relevant experience to masters degree level of equivalent., * Extensive experience in the use of relational databases, querying techniques and data analysis/interpretation, at an advanced level.
