Job description

Provides operational, field-level and infrastructure support primarily for the Town’s Police Department’s technology systems, as well as has the flexibility to help other Town departments when needed. This position ensures continuity, reliability, and security of departmental systems including software platforms, workstation hardware, internal camera systems, vehicle-based equipment and network cabling infrastructure. This role will help to reduce operational risk by managing day-to-day technology maintenance while supporting the IT Systems Supervisor. This is a hands-on technical operations role within a public safety environment., (The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Manage software updates, patches, configuration changes, and system issue resolution.
  • Administer and support web-based software platforms, including evidence management and reporting systems.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot network cabling infrastructure, including Ethernet, fiber, and coaxial connections.
  • Maintain IT infrastructure areas, including equipment closets, racks, and associated hardware.
  • Support office relocations, workstation deployments, and technology reconfigurations.
  • Configure, deploy, upgrade, and maintain computer hardware, peripherals, and other IT equipment.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and asset tracking for all IT hardware and devices.
  • Configure and support mobile devices and endpoint systems.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot in-car camera systems and other vehicle-mounted technology.
  • Diagnose and resolve connectivity and technical issues in patrol vehicles and mobile work environments.
  • Provide end-user technical support, including troubleshooting hardware, software, and system issues.
  • Document troubleshooting processes and resolutions in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Escalate complex network or security-related issues to the IT Systems Specialist as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of Windows workstations
  • Basic network troubleshooting (IP, VLAN awareness)
  • Familiarity with cabling such as Cat6, fiber, coax,
  • Through knowledge in hardware and diagnostics repair
  • Ability to diagnose issues with mobile data systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple field-level issues
  • A strong understanding of evidence sensitivity and data handling standards
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise records and reports.
  • Ability to work in a neat and orderly environment with high attention to detail
  • Strong problem-solving approach
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, Town Officials, citizens, community leaders, and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to carry or move objects in various lifting positions, such as overhead, chest height, etc.

  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate a police vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things on patrol.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves May be subject to hazards in law enforcement work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards to include but not limited to dangerous persons, heavy traffic, loud noises, and hazardous spills with fumes, oils, gases, and flammable liquids. This position is subject to all State and Federal OSHA regulations, including, but not limited to the following: bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication/GHS, personal protective equipment, slips, trips, and falls, etc., * Graduation with a high school diploma, GED, or high school equivalency from an accredited educational institution and experience in IT work preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • At least two (2) years of IT operations experience, including software platforms, workstation hardware, internal camera systems, vehicle-based equipment and network cabling infrastructure.
  • Experience in municipal or law enforcement IT environments preferred.

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License within 60 days of employment with a safe driving record. (If you possess a South Carolina Driver’s License and maintain residence in South Carolina, you are not required to obtain a North Carolina Driver’s License).
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Justice Information Services Security and Privacy Training within 30 days of employment.
