Job description

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year. The Alternate Format Text Specialist is responsible for creating and remediating course materials and textbooks for students with approved disability accommodations. This position supports the University’s Alternate Format Text (AFT) services by converting instructional materials into accessible formats that comply with accessibility standards and promote equal access to academic programs. Under the direction of the Manager of Assistive Technology, the Specialist reviews and remediates digital and scanned documents, textbooks, and course materials by correcting document structure and reading order, creating accessible PDF, Word, and electronic text files, and adding alternative text descriptions for images and graphics. The Specialist also verifies compatibility with screen readers and other assistive technologies. This is a remote, part-time position that focuses exclusively on the remediation and preparation of accessible documents and textbooks Essential Functions * Remediate and convert course materials, textbooks, and instructional content into accessible formats (e.g., accessible PDF, Word, and electronic text) for students with approved disability accommodations.

  • Apply accessibility standards to digital and scanned documents by correcting document structure, reading order, headings, tables, and adding alternative text descriptions for images and graphics.

Requirements

  • Ability to remediate inaccessible instructional and assessment materials to provide equitable access for students with disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility features and standards within Adobe Acrobat and Windows and iOS operating systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of assistive technologies, including screen readers, speech-to-text software, Braille translation tools, and related hardware and software, including but not limited to Kurzweil, JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, Braille translation software and devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, meet strict deadlines, and respond promptly to multiple stakeholder requests.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail., * Bachelor’s degree in the field of education, information technology, assistive technology, or related field. Master’s degree in the field of education, information technology, assistive technology, or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with assistive technology for students with disabilities in education.
  • Expertise in various assistive software technologies.
  • Zero to two (0-2) years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related area and eight (8) years professional experience
  • 2-4 years professional experience
