We are seeking a Release Train Engineer (RTE) to serve as a member of the project management team. This role is onsite at a government location in Colorado Springs, CO or Huntsville, AL and has very limited travel requirements
The Release Train Engineer (RTE) serves as the servant leader and chief Scrum Master for a DoD Agile Release Train (ART) consisting of 8 Agile teams (50-80 personnel) delivering mission-critical capabilities. The RTE ensures disciplined execution of SAFe practices, predictable delivery, and alignment with DoD governance, security, and compliance requirements. This role drives program flow, facilitates major SAFe ceremonies, manages cross-team dependencies, and ensures transparency across technical, security, and mission stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
The candidate will:
Program Leadership & Facilitation

Lead and facilitate all major SAFe ceremonies, including PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, ART Sync, System Demos, and Inspect & Adapt.

Serve as the chief Scrum Master for the ART, ensuring consistent Agile execution across 8 teams.

Maintain disciplined program cadence aligned with DoD acquisition, security, and reporting requirements.
Delivery & Execution
-
Ensure predictable, high-quality delivery of Program Increments supporting mission, cybersecurity, and operational objectives.

Track and communicate ART progress, risks, dependencies, and impediments to government leadership.

Partner with Product Management, System Architects, cybersecurity teams, and mission stakeholders to maintain alignment on priorities and outcomes.
Risk, Dependency & Compliance Management

Facilitate ROAMing of risks and ensure clear ownership, mitigation, and traceability.

Coordinate cross-team dependencies, including external DoD programs, vendors, and enterprise services.

Support compliance with DoD frameworks such as RMF, Zero Trust, ICAM, and program-specific cybersecurity requirements.
Coaching & Continuous Improvement

Coach Scrum Masters, Product Owners, and teams on SAFe principles, Agile values, and flow-based delivery.

Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement across the ART.

Guide teams in adopting flow metrics (flow load, flow time, predictability, quality indicators).
Operational Excellence

Ensure SAFe artifacts, ceremonies, and cadences are executed with rigor appropriate for federal environments.

Champion DevSecOps practices, automation, and tooling that improve delivery flow and compliance.

Support documentation, audit readiness, and reporting required for DoD oversight.

Support Organizational Change - Help stakeholders adopt agile ways of working, including iterative planning, incremental delivery, and adaptive decision-making.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in Agile delivery, Scrum Mastery, or program-level Agile leadership.

Hands-on experience facilitating SAFe ceremonies and guiding Agile teams.

Strong understanding of Agile frameworks (Scrum, Kanban) and SAFe principles.

Demonstrated ability to manage program-level risks, dependencies, and cross-team coordination.

Excellent communication, facilitation, and servant-leadership skills.
-
Experience supporting mission-critical or security-sensitive programs.

Experience using agile tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Rally, or VersionOne.
-
Proven ability to manage sprint cadence, enforce Scrum discipline, and maintain delivery focus.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence without authority.

Ability to analyze team performance metrics and translate insights into actionable improvements.
-
Must have an active DoD/DoW Secret Security Clearance.
-
Must be able to obtain an active DoD/DoW Top Secret Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
-
SAFe RTE, SAFe SPC, or SAFe Scrum Master certification.
-
Experience supporting 50-80 personnel across multiple Agile teams.
-
Familiarity with DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines, and flow-based metrics.
-
Experience in DoD, federal contracting, or regulated environments.
-
Understanding of RMF, Zero Trust, ICAM, or other federal cybersecurity frameworks.
