Job description

Rippling’s Emerging Products teams which span Core Experience, Spend, and IT Products build deeply integrated systems across financial operations, IT administration, employee lifecycle automation, and enterprise security. These are high-trust product areas where reliability, correctness, security, and scale are critical.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll design and build the services, APIs, and platform primitives that power complex workflows across Rippling’s multi-product platform. You’ll work on systems involving permissions, policy enforcement, approvals, payments, device and app management, procurement, asset tracking, auditability, and secure handling of sensitive workforce and financial data.

This role also supports Rippling’s expansion of AI-powered workflows across HR, IT, Finance, Spend, and core platform experiences. You’ll help make AI capabilities safe, reliable, explainable, auditable, and enterprise-ready, while ensuring customers have the trust, transparency, and control needed to adopt automation at scale.

What you will do:

  • Develop and improve both product backend capabilities and user-facing features, working across the stack to make them shine
  • Own the design and implementation of backend services and APIs that power critical product capabilities.
  • Build reliable, secure, and scalable systems for high-volume workflows across Spend, IT, identity, access, approvals, and compliance.
  • Translate ambiguous business and customer needs into robust technical solutions in partnership with product, frontend, platform, design, and cross-functional teams.
  • Build and evolve systems involving workflows, permissions, policy enforcement, financial operations, device and app management, procurement, and security controls.
  • Raise the technical bar through system design, code reviews, design reviews, mentorship, and backend engineering best practices.
  • Help create unified product experiences that replace fragmented point solutions for managing employees, spend, devices, apps, access, and business operations.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a production environment using Python, Django, or related technologies.
  • Familiarity in frontend development with React or typescript.
  • Exposure and hands on experience with systems operating at a significant technical and organizational scale
  • Strong product intuition: you care about design and user experience and are quick to identify how these could be improved.
  • Experience shipping complex projects
  • Deep understanding of CS/algorithms fundamentals
  • Strong communication skills with a variety of stakeholders

Benefits & conditions

This role will receive a competitive salary + benefits + equity. The salary for US-based employees will be aligned with one of the ranges below based on location; see which tier applies to your location here.

About the company

Rippling gives businesses one place to run HR, IT, and Finance. It brings together all of the workforce systems that are normally scattered across a company, like payroll, expenses, benefits, and computers. For the first time ever, you can manage and automate every part of the employee lifecycle in a single system.

Take onboarding, for example. With Rippling, you can hire a new employee anywhere in the world and set up their payroll, corporate card, computer, benefits, and even third-party apps like Slack and Microsoft 365-all within 90 seconds.

Based in San Francisco, CA, Rippling has raised $1.4B+ from the world’s top investors-including Kleiner Perkins, Founders Fund, Sequoia, Greenoaks, and Bedrock-and was named one of America’s best startup employers by Forbes.
