Job description

We have an ambitious multi-year plan to transform how we deliver our data and insights. As a Full Stack Web Developer, you’ll join a growing team of software developers as we deliver our web-based data delivery strategy. You’ll help extend and improve cloud-based APIs and client applications that provide hazard maps and flood-risk data to organizations around the world.

Our backend systems make use of AWS serverless technologies, with Python as our main programming language. For our user-facing applications, we use Django and Vue.js. You’ll contribute to the development of our flood visualisation and analysis software, JBA Vision, and our flood-risk APIs, helping transform complex environmental data into accessible, reliable services.

As a key member of the team, you’ll collaborate with software developers, software testers, flood-risk experts, data scientists and other technical specialists. From gathering requirements and contributing to technical discussions through to developing, testing and deploying production-ready code, you’ll be involved throughout the software development lifecycle.

This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of software development, cloud technology, geospatial data and climate science, while helping build services that support better decisions about flood risk.

Requirements

We are looking for an inquisitive and curious software developer who enjoys learning, solving problems and contributing to innovative projects. You’ll be a collaborative team player who values diverse perspectives, open communication and knowledge sharing. You take pride in writing high-quality software, applying good development practices and delivering reliable solutions.

We welcome people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Whether you meet every requirement or are developing your skills in some areas, we encourage you to apply if you are passionate about Python and excited by the opportunity to learn, contribute and grow with the team.

We need an experienced software developer with a strong track record of developing and delivering software in a commercial environment. A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related subject is desirable, but equivalent practical experience will also be considered.

Essential attributes for the role:

· Strong Python development skills, with a solid understanding of core concepts and experience applying Python to build and maintain software solutions.

· Commercial software development experience, with a track record of contributing to the design, development and delivery of production-ready software

· Experience designing and developing APIs.

· Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD techniques.

· Familiarity with GitLab or similar platforms for version control and CI/CD.

· Experience working with Linux/Unix operating systems.

· The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

· A collaborative approach to problem-solving and software development, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues from different technical and professional backgrounds

Desirable attributes for the role:

· A scientific or mathematical background.

· Experience with AWS serverless technologies, such as Lambda, API Gateway and CDK.

· Front-end development experience using modern JavaScript frameworks, such as Vue.js or React.

· Experience developing Python-based web applications using frameworks such as Django or Flask.

· Experience creating Python-based web APIs using technologies such as Django REST Framework or Flask-RESTful.

· Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.

· Familiarity with relational databases.

· Knowledge of Python packaging for distributing libraries and tools.

· Knowledge of Agile software development practices, such as Scrum or Kanban.
