Job description

The Data Center Commissioning Manager is GMC’s senior onsite presence and the owner’s representative on a mission-critical data center program. You will run the commissioning program day to day across Levels 2 through 5: you hold the schedule, you hold the acceptance gates, and you are the single voice reporting program status, risk, and issue resolution to the owner.

GMC’s first assignment for this role is a 14 MW liquid-cooled high-density compute deployment inside an operating facility, delivered across four phased turnovers under an owner-direct model. Each phase turns over at a defined and temporarily reduced redundancy condition that must be explicitly proven and documented, then re-validated as later phases restore full redundancy. Integrated systems testing is therefore not a single end-of-job event. It repeats per phase against live load.

What You Will Own

  • Owner’s representative role. Lead the weekly commissioning meeting, the weekly QA/QC meeting and site walk, and the daily commissioning workshop that coordinates the day’s testing, switching, and LOTO between GMC, the general contractor, equipment vendors, and the controls contractor.
  • Acceptance authority. Review and approve L2A, L2B, and L3 checklists and L4 and L5 test documentation; sign checklists as approved; apply and sign the program’s staged acceptance tags. Manage conditional acceptance where energization must progress, with open items documented and deadlined.
  • Issue management. Own the issues resolution log end to end - classify by priority and safety impact, drive assignees to resolution, verify evidence of correction, and be the only party who closes an issue.
  • Schedule integration. Integrate L4 and L5 test durations into the general contractor’s program; maintain the two-week look-ahead, witness scheduling, and notification lead times; flag schedule impact the moment a gate is threatened.
  • Energization and cutover support. Review methods of procedure and risk assessments for energizations and tie-ins against live load; verify the contractor’s authorized person and permit-to-work controls are in place before work proceeds.
  • Receipt and installation verification. Direct L2A delivery and installation inspections against the equipment delivery calendar, and 100% rack-level verification with no sampling.
  • Turnover and closeout. Assemble phase turnover packages: tag records, executed checklists and scripts, raw data, as-left settings, and the integrated systems test report, and coordinate owner and operations training.
  • Client relationship ownership. Serve as the day-to-day face of GMC to the owner. Protect the relationship through difficult findings, identify follow-on scope as it emerges, and support the Principal-in-Charge on renewals and expansion within the account.
  • Team leadership. Direct resident commissioning agents and surge staff during test blocks; mentor junior staff; enforce GMC’s documentation and quality standards in the field.

Requirements

  • Eight or more years in commissioning, construction management, or critical facility startup, including at least four years on data centers or comparable mission-critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated ownership of the full L1-L5 commissioning lifecycle or equivalent installation verification through integrated systems testing scope on at least one facility of 5 MW or greater.
  • Experience working owner-side (owner’s representative, commissioning authority, or owner’s project team) rather than as part of the installing contractor’s team.
  • An accredited commissioning credential, (CxA (ACG), CCP (BCxA), BCxP (ASHRAE), QCxP) held at hire or obtained within twelve months of start. GMC’s value to owners rests on being the certified independent authority, and this role signs the acceptance documentation.
  • Fluency with staged, tag-gated acceptance systems, issues resolution logs, and commissioning management platforms such as CxPlanner, Facility Grid, or CxAlloy.
  • Working command of both electrical and mechanical critical systems, enough to challenge a vendor’s test result in either discipline, even if your depth sits on one side.
  • Ability to be onsite full-time in Greater Boston through final turnover; relocation assistance is available for the right candidate.
  • The professional composure to hold a gate closed under schedule pressure and explain why, in writing, to a superintendent and to an owner on the same day., * Professional Engineer license, electrical or mechanical.
  • Experience commissioning within an occupied, operating facility where later work energizes against live critical load.
  • Direct-to-chip liquid cooling and high-density deployment experience.
  • Level I infrared thermography certification.
  • Active participation in ACG, BCxA, or 7x24 Exchange.
