Job description

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to help build the foundational infrastructure that allows our client to scale its AI platform to some of the world’s largest companies. This is a hands-on backend and platform role where you’ll work on distributed systems, APIs, data flows, infrastructure, and the systems powering large-scale LLM workloads.

The role is broader than simply building backend features. You’ll own problems end-to-end, from system design and architecture through implementation, production, and ongoing optimisation. You’ll work closely with product engineers to build the infrastructure and internal tooling that keeps them fast and unblocked., * Backend architecture and production systems supporting enterprise customers

  • Infrastructure that allows product engineers to focus on building features rather than maintaining plumbing
  • Shared abstractions, internal tooling, and sensible platform defaults
  • Distributed systems handling large-scale data and batch processing
  • Reliable LLM infrastructure dealing with high token throughput, real-time workloads, and unreliable providers
  • Core systems around authentication, observability, job orchestration, and reliability
  • Performance optimisation and scaling as Conduct moves from early-stage systems to enterprise scale

Stack:

  • Kotlin backend with the wider Java ecosystem
  • PostgreSQL and large-scale data processing
  • Temporal for durable execution and job orchestration
  • PortKey for enterprise-compliant LLM routing
  • Specialised LLM infrastructure and harnesses
  • React, Vite, and TanStack on the frontend

What we offer:

  • Full-time, in-person role in London
  • The opportunity to work on infrastructure powering an AI-native enterprise product
  • Significant ownership from day one in a small, talent-dense engineering team
  • Complex distributed systems and LLM infrastructure challenges at real enterprise scale
  • Direct impact on the developer experience and reliability of the entire engineering organisation
  • A high-velocity, low-ego environment with strong engineering ownership
  • The opportunity to work on systems where the infrastructure decisions you make directly shape how the company scales

Requirements

  • 3+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally with exposure to platform or infrastructure work
  • Strong system design instincts and the ability to own problems across APIs, infrastructure, and data flows
  • Experience with distributed systems, PostgreSQL at scale, queueing, and large-scale batch processing
  • Comfortable benchmarking and tuning systems under real production load
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and a pragmatic approach to architectural trade-offs
  • Familiarity with LLM infrastructure and high-throughput AI workloads
  • High-agency mindset - someone who identifies problems, fixes them, and raises the engineering bar around them
  • Experience with the Java ecosystem; Kotlin is the primary backend language at Conduct

Benefits & conditions

Pay: From £70,000.00 per year
