Job description

To support the development, maintenance and operation of PHP-based applications and associated MySQL/MariaDB database systems that underpin C-TEC’s connected fire alarm and nursecall product platforms, including Envision and Quantec Surveyor.

The Junior PHP Developer / Database Administrator will assist with application development, database maintenance, troubleshooting, and the support of existing APIs, backend services and connected product platforms.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills across software development, databases, APIs, Linux systems and production support within a successful engineering organisation.

Unlike many junior development roles, the work has a direct connection to real-world life-safety systems. The successful candidate will see how software and database decisions affect system reliability, serviceability and the experience of customers and engineers.

Working alongside experienced engineers and software developers, the role provides exposure to real-world software development, database administration, product support and operational systems used by both customers and internal teams.

You’ll also gain experience supporting production systems which, as every experienced engineer eventually discovers, tend to receive the most attention when they stop working., · Develop and maintain PHP applications.

· Write and optimise SQL queries.

· Maintain MySQL/MariaDB databases.

· Investigate application and database issues.

· Assist with backups, restores and deployments.

· Support existing APIs, backend services and connected product platforms.

· Work with Linux-based systems and application logs.

· Maintain clear technical documentation.

Requirements

Essential Skills

· Some hands-on experience with PHP.

· Good working knowledge of SQL.

· Experience with MySQL or MariaDB.

· Basic HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

· Familiarity with Linux.

· Basic Git/source control knowledge.

· Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Desirable

· PHP frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony.

· REST APIs and JSON.

· Database performance tuning.

· Apache or Nginx.

· Docker or cloud environments.

· Experience supporting production systems, connected products or customer-facing applications.

Experience Level

We are ideally looking for someone with around 1-2 years’ experience, although strong practical experience from projects, placements or apprenticeships would also be considered.

Key Success Measures

· PHP applications are maintained and improved in line with business needs.

· SQL queries and database work are accurate, maintainable and appropriately optimised.

· MySQL/MariaDB databases are supported reliably, including backups, restores and deployments.

· Application and database issues are investigated methodically and resolved or escalated with useful evidence.

· APIs, backend services, Linux systems and application logs are supported competently.

· Technical documentation is clear, useful and kept up to date.
