Job description

The Biomedical Technician/Equipment Support Specialist - Information Systems provides specialized technical support for clinical information and medical device network/interface systems at MEDVAMC and its associated outpatient clinics. This includes, but is not limited to, systems such as the Marquette Universal System of Electrocardiography (MUSE), the Intensive Care Unit-Clinical Information System (ICU-CIS), and the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). This position bridges biomedical equipment support with clinical IT/network infrastructure, ensuring reliable data flow between medical devices and hospital information systems, and works under the technical oversight of VA Biomedical Engineering and IT staff and the administrative oversight of the designated L-COR., * Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot clinical information systems interfacing with biomedical equipment, including MUSE cardiology data management systems, ICU-CIS physiological monitoring/charting systems, and PACS medical imaging archival and distribution systems.

  • Support server, workstation, and network-connected medical device interfaces, ensuring proper communication between bedside/point-of-care devices and clinical information systems (e.g., HL7 interfaces, DICOM connectivity).
  • Perform routine system health checks, software/firmware updates, database maintenance, and backup verification for supported clinical information systems, in coordination with VA IT/OI&T and Biomedical Engineering staff.
  • Diagnose and resolve system outages, interface failures, connectivity issues, and data integrity problems affecting clinical information systems; escalate to OEM technical support or VA network/IT staff as required.
  • Coordinate with hospital IT (OI&T), network engineering, and cybersecurity staff to ensure medical device network systems comply with VA information security policy, including network segmentation, patching, and vulnerability remediation requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, interface maps, IP addressing, software versions, and service records for all supported clinical information systems.
  • Support new system implementations, upgrades, and migrations, including testing, validation, and coordination of downtime with clinical departments.
  • Provide end-user technical support and basic troubleshooting guidance to clinical and biomedical staff regarding supported systems.
  • Participate in medical device cybersecurity risk assessments and remediation activities in coordination with VA Information Security Officers (ISO) and biomedical engineering staff.
  • Maintain compliance records related to system validation, change control, and regulatory/accreditation requirements applicable to clinical information systems., * Primarily office/data-center and clinical environment work; occasional lifting of computer hardware/network equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Work performed across server rooms, clinical units, and outpatient clinic IT closets; requires adherence to facility access, safety, and infection control practices.
  • Travel required between MEDVAMC and associated outpatient clinics within a 50-mile radius.

Security and Background Requirements

  • Must undergo and pass a VA-required background investigation (e.g., Tier 1/Public Trust) prior to performing unescorted work at MEDVAMC or associated clinics.
  • Must complete VA information security, privacy, and HIPAA/PHI-handling training prior to accessing VA systems, networks, or patient data, and annually thereafter.
  • Must comply with VA rules of behavior for use of government IT systems, VA network access, and handling of Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
  • Subject to VA facility access control procedures, including badge issuance, escort requirements (if applicable), and compliance with facility safety and infection-control policies.
  • Subject to VA OI&T-specific access requirements, including network account provisioning, remote access authorization, and compliance with VA information security directives applicable to systems handling patient data.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year

Requirements

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; equivalent military training or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered., * Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience supporting clinical/medical information systems such as MUSE, ICU-CIS, PACS, or comparable hospital clinical data systems.
  • Experience with medical device network integration, HL7 interface engines, or DICOM-based imaging systems preferred.
  • Experience working in a hospital biomedical engineering, clinical engineering, or health IT (OI&T) environment, including exposure to VA or other federal healthcare IT systems, is highly desirable.

Certifications/Licensure:

  • CBET (Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician) or CHTM/relevant IT certification (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Security+) preferred.
  • Vendor-specific training/certification on supported systems (e.g., GE MUSE, Philips/GE ICU-CIS platforms, PACS vendor systems) preferred or required to be obtained within a specified period.
  • Valid, unrestricted state driver’s license, as travel between MEDVAMC and outpatient clinics within the 50-mile radius is required., * Working knowledge of clinical information system architecture, including servers, workstations, interfaces, and network connectivity for medical devices.
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (HL7, DICOM) and their application to clinical data exchange.
  • Understanding of VA/federal information security requirements applicable to networked medical devices (e.g., medical device isolation architecture, RMF/ATO processes) preferred.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for diagnosing complex, multi-system interface and connectivity issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical staff, IT/network staff, biomedical engineers, and OEM support representatives.
  • Solid documentation and change-management discipline for system configuration and validation records.
