Job description
This is not a traditional drafting-focused position. We are looking for an engineer who can understand a customer’s requirements, analyse how their operation works and design an effective solution around it.
The Role
As a Solutions Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing designs and concepts from initial customer requirements through to detailed solution development.
You’ll analyse operational data, understand material flows and develop design concepts that meet customer requirements, operational needs and project objectives.
The role is approximately 70-80% design and solution development, with the remainder involving customer and internal communication.
You’ll produce design proposals, concepts, 3D visualisations and material flow models, working alongside suppliers and internal teams to develop the most appropriate solution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop concept and detailed designs based on customer requirements.
- Analyse customer requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions.
- Review operational data and use Excel to analyse order lines, units, volumes and material flows.
- Develop material flow models to support design decisions.
- Produce design proposals, concepts, 3D renders and animations.
- Develop multiple design options and assess the most appropriate solution.
- Use AutoCAD to develop and communicate design concepts.
- Work with equipment suppliers to select appropriate components and technologies.
- Incorporate third-party equipment into overall solution designs.
- Present designs and proposals to customers, clearly explaining the proposed solution.
- Visit customer sites across England to understand existing operations and requirements.
- Maintain an understanding of developments in material handling and warehouse technology.
- Work closely with engineering, software, commercial and project teams throughout the design process.
Requirements
Are you a Design Engineer with strong problem-solving skills and an ability to turn customer requirements into practical engineering solutions?
Would you enjoy a role where you are responsible for designing complete solutions, developing concepts, analysing data and presenting your designs directly to customers?, You could be a Mechanical Design Engineer, Electrical Design Engineer, Solutions Design Engineer, Design Engineer or Project Design Engineer with experience of developing engineering solutions.
Your background could be in material handling, manufacturing, logistics, production, warehouse equipment, machinery design, systems integration or another engineering environment.
The key is that you are a logical thinker who can understand how a system or process works, identify the requirements and design a solution that works in practice.
You’ll ideally have:
- A relevant engineering degree or 5+ years’ relevant design engineering experience.
- Experience developing engineering designs or solutions from customer requirements.
- Strong AutoCAD and Excel skills.
- Good data analysis and problem-solving ability.
- An understanding of engineering processes, material flow and tolerances.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- The ability to interpret information and turn it into practical design solutions.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Confidence dealing directly with customers and presenting technical designs.
- The ability to travel to customer sites across England when required.
Experience within material handling, machinery design, warehouse equipment, logistics, manufacturing or intralogistics would be advantageous, but the ability to design and solve engineering problems is more important than having a specific industry background., If you’re an experienced Design Engineer who enjoys taking requirements, analysing problems and creating practical engineering solutions, this could be an excellent opportunity to develop your career in a highly varied and specialist design environment.
