Job description
We are seeking specialist tutors to mentor a highly motivated 16-year-old student who has just completed his GCSEs. He is a self-taught technology enthusiast who already runs his own Linux home servers (Debian/Fedora), has set up DNS-level ad blocking (Pi-hole) and a Jellyfin media server, writes software in C (including with the Raylib library), and has basic Python skills.
The goal of these lessons is to channel his existing passion into professionally valuable, career-relevant skills. We are looking for structured, project-based teaching - not passive lectures - building towards recognised certifications and a portfolio of real work.
Lessons will run once per week per subject (60-90 minutes), online with practical assignments set between sessions., Teach a motivated teenage student professional DevOps, Linux administration, and cloud engineering practices, using his existing home-lab setup as the foundation, with a long-term view towards a career in DevOps, platform engineering, or SRE work.
Requirements
- Currently working (or recently working) as a DevOps engineer, platform engineer, SRE, or cloud engineer
- Cloud certification preferred: AWS Solutions Architect / Cloud Practitioner, Azure equivalents, or demonstrable production experience
- Strong with Linux, Docker, Git, and automation tooling
- Able to design a project-based curriculum around the student’s own servers and interests
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one), as this involves one-to-one tuition of a minor
Scope of teaching (indicative)
- Professional Linux administration and command-line fluency
- Version control with Git and GitHub, including a public portfolio of projects
- Containerisation: Dockerising his existing Jellyfin/media server setup
- Automation and scripting (Bash, Python), infrastructure-as-code basics
- Networking fundamentals (DNS, firewalls - building on his Pi-hole experience)
- Monitoring and backups for his home lab
- Cloud fundamentals, working towards AWS Cloud Practitioner as a first certification (target: 12 months), then deeper cloud/DevOps topics, * A rough 3-month lesson plan showing how you would start with this student
