Job description

Wells Fargo is seeking a Technology Director to join its Rates Technology organization. This role will serve as Co-Head of Rates Technology , a senior leadership position responsible for shaping and delivering the strategic vision, architecture, and execution of technology platforms supporting the firm’s global Rates business.

Role Overview

As Co-Head of Rates Technology, you will lead the design, development, and evolution of critical front-to-back systems that power trade capture, pricing, risk management, market data, and middle/back office functions. These platforms support a diverse range of Rates products, including swaps, swaptions, interest rate futures, Treasuries, and agency securities.

This is a highly visible role that combines hands-on engineering leadership with deep partnership across the front office. You will act as a strategic technology partner to stakeholders across trading, sales, structuring, research, and risk , ensuring seamless alignment between business priorities and technical execution.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team or teams of engineering managers and experienced engineers in specialized domain areas, in roles with moderate complexity and risk responsible for building high quality capabilities with modern technology

  • Ensure adherence to the Banking Platform Architecture, and meeting non-functional requirements with each release

  • Partner with, engage and influence architects and experienced engineers to incorporate Wells Fargo Technology technical strategies, while understanding next generation domain architecture and enable application migration paths to target architecture, for example cloud readiness, application modernization, data strategy

  • Function as the technical representative for the product during cross-team collaborative efforts and planning

  • Identify and recommend opportunities for driving escalated resolution of technology roadblocks including code, build and deployment while also managing overall software development cycle and security standards

  • Determine appropriate strategy and actions to act as an escalation partner for scrum masters and the teams to meet moderate to high-risk deliverables and help remove impediments, obstacles, and friction while encouraging constant learning, experimentation, and continual improvement

  • Build engineering skills side-by-side in the codebase, conduct peer reviews to evaluate quality and solution alignment to technical direction, and guide design, as needed

  • Interpret, develop and ensure security, stability, and scalability within functions of technology with moderate complexity, as well as identify, manage and mitigate technology and enterprise risk

  • Collaborate with, partner with and influence Product Managers/Product Owners to drive user satisfaction, influence technology requirements and priorities in the product roadmap, promote innovative and intelligent solutions, generate corporate value and articulate technical strategy while being a solid advocate of agile and DevOps practices

  • Interact directly with third party vendors and technology service providers

  • Manage allocation of people and financial resources to ensure commitments are met and align with strategic objectives in technology engineering

  • Hire, build and guide a culture of talent development to have the specialized domain experience and skills required to effectively design and deliver innovative solutions for product areas and products to meet business objectives and strategy, as well as conduct performance management for engineers and managers

Key Responsibilities

Front Office Partnership & Business Leadership

  • Act as a trusted technology partner to Rates trading and sales leadership, with a clear understanding of interest rate products (e.g., government bonds, swaps, futures, options).

  • Translate front-office strategy, market structure changes, and regulatory requirements into technology roadmaps and delivery priorities.

  • Engage directly with traders and quantitative teams to shape trade capture, pricing, risk, execution, and lifecycle workflows.

Engineering & Platform Ownership

  • Jointly own the end-to-end Rates technology stack

  • Drive engineering excellence across architecture, code quality, testing, and production stability.

  • Set clear technical standards and best practices while enabling teams to move quickly and thoughtfully.

Technology Strategy & Modernization

  • Define and execute a forward-looking technology strategy for Rates, aligned with firm-wide architecture principles.

  • Balance build vs. buy decisions and manage vendor relationships where relevant.

  • Ensure platforms scale with increasing electronic volumes and performance demands.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead and develop a global organization of engineers, technologists, and managers.

  • Foster a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide clear direction, accountability, and career progression for teams.

Governance, Risk & Reliability

  • Ensure technology platforms meet operational resilience, security, and regulatory standards.

  • Partner with risk, compliance, and operations teams to manage production risk and incident response.

  • Serve as a senior escalation point for critical incidents affecting Rates trading or risk systems.

Cross-Asset & Firmwide Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with the FX and LOB tech leads to drive consistency and within CIB.

  • Contribute to enterprise-level technology governance, investment prioritization, and architectural decisions.

  • Represent Rates Technology in senior management forums., Employees support our focus on building strong customer relationships balanced with a strong risk mitigating and compliance-driven culture which firmly establishes those disciplines as critical to the success of our customers and company. They are accountable for execution of all applicable risk programs (Credit, Market, Financial Crimes, Operational, Regulatory Compliance), which includes effectively following and adhering to applicable Wells Fargo policies and procedures, appropriately fulfilling risk and compliance obligations, timely and effective escalation and remediation of issues, and making sound risk decisions. There is emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite and all risk and compliance program requirements.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of Specialty Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience

  • 7+ years of experience in front-office technology leadership at Tier 1 banks or hedge funds within Rates, Fixed Income, or closely related markets.

  • 7+ years of Rates products, trading workflows, and risk concepts

  • 7+ years of deep technical background (e.g., distributed systems, low-latency architectures, data platforms)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Capital markets experience, preferably in Rates Derivatives

  • Working knowledge of Agile best practices

  • Ability to balance hands-on technical judgment with strategic leadership and stakeholder management.

  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage credibly with both traders and senior executives

  • Experience with middleware messaging technologies like Solace, Tibco RV, etc.

  • Experience with caching technologies such as Coherence, MongoDB, Redis, etc.

  • Experience with event processing technologies such as Apache Storm, Apache Flink, etc.
