Job description

We are looking for an experienced and collaborative Engineering Tech Lead to guide the technical direction and execution of our platform team. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll set technical standards, drive architectural decisions, and lead a blended team of in-house and offshore engineers. You’ll partner closely with our VP of Technology, product, and clinical operations to translate our healthcare mission into reliable, scalable software, while still spending meaningful time writing code yourself.

A core part of this role is championing the responsible, effective use of AI - both in how our team builds software and in how AI capabilities are integrated into our platform. We believe AI is reshaping what engineering teams can deliver, and we’re looking for a leader who is excited to set the standard for using it well.

Responsibilities & Duties

Overall Objective

Lead the design, build, and ongoing evolution of integrated systems that empower our internal staff and deliver meaningful healthcare outcomes for patients and providers - while developing the engineers around you.

Our Team

You’ll lead a small, blended engineering team made up of in-house developers based in Utah and offshore contributors working across time zones. Strong async communication, clear written documentation, and intentional coordination practices are essential to how we operate.

Our Tech Stack

We primarily use Node.js and React written in TypeScript, with PostgreSQL, hosted on GCP. Our platform runs on Cloud Run with GCP Identity Platform, IAP, and Cloud SQL. We’re actively investing in AI-assisted development workflows and building AI for internal tooling and platform features.

Technical Leadership

  • Own architectural direction for our platform services and infrastructure, balancing pragmatism with long-term scalability
  • Set and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, security, observability, and HIPAA compliance
  • Drive technical roadmap planning in partnership with the VP of Technology and Product
  • Evolve our tooling, deployment practices, CI/CD, and monitoring to support a growing patient base and team

AI Leadership

  • Champion the responsible, effective use of AI across the engineering team - setting the standard for how we use AI coding assistants to ship faster without compromising quality
  • Establish team norms and guardrails for AI-assisted development, including code review expectations, security and PHI handling, and quality bars for AI-generated code
  • Stay current on the rapidly evolving AI landscape and translate it into practical decisions for our team and product

Team Leadership

  • Lead a blended team of in-house and offshore engineers; coordinate work across time zones, set priorities, and ensure delivery
  • Develop engineers at all levels through code reviews, technical design reviews, pairing, and direct mentorship
  • Onboard new engineers and contractors, ensuring they ramp effectively into our codebase, practices, and team norms
  • Provide input into hiring, performance, and team composition decisions across both in-house and offshore staffing

Engineering & Delivery

  • Stay hands-on: write clean, maintainable, well-tested code for the highest-leverage parts of the platform
  • Lead complex, cross-cutting initiatives (integrations, migrations, platform-wide changes) end-to-end
  • Troubleshoot production issues, lead incident response, and drive reliability improvements
  • Ensure the team ships predictably and communicates status clearly to stakeholders

Collaboration & Culture

  • Partner with Product, Clinical Operations, and Billing to translate requirements into scalable solutions
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, feedback-driven engineering culture across geographies and time zones
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, internal documentation, and engineering best practices

Requirements

Do you have experience in TypeScript?, * Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years in a tech lead, staff, or engineering management capacity
  • Strong proficiency with TypeScript/Node.js and React; comfort across the full stack
  • Experience designing APIs, working with relational databases (Postgres preferred), and building scalable cloud infrastructure on GCP, AWS, etc.
  • Experience owning CI/CD pipelines, observability, and production reliability for a real product
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or similar) in real production work, with a thoughtful point of view on where they help, where they don’t, and how to use them responsibly
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and improving team-level engineering practices
  • Demonstrated experience leading blended in-house and offshore engineering teams
  • Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences; a collaborative, low-ego approach to problem solving
  • Bonus: Experience in healthcare, care coordination, HIPAA-regulated environments, or other compliance-heavy sectors
  • Bonus: Experience building or integrating AI/LLM-powered features into a production product (Vertex AI, Anthropic, OpenAI, or similar), including awareness of evaluation, cost, and safety considerations
  • Bonus: Familiarity with AI governance frameworks (NIST AI RMF, EU AI Act) or experience deploying AI in regulated settings
