  • Jumping into a dynamic team environment to refine our engineering practices and actively shape a tribe and product transformation as we evolve our backend architecture for the future
  • Looking beyond existing solutions to actively identify architectural bottlenecks and drive meaningful improvements

Our Tech Stack:

  • Backend Services: Kotlin, Spring Boot, Relational Databases (PostgreSQL), AWS (ECS, SQS, Eventbridge, EC2), Infrastructure as Code (Pulumi)

Requirements

  • You will be surrounded by like-minded, driven, skilled, and highly motivated people who are keen to contribute to successful solutions, * A background in computer science and software engineering, including a minimum of 3 years of backend experience
  • Proficiency in Kotlin or deep production experience in Java with a strong affinity for Kotlin, along with frameworks like Spring Boot and build tools like Gradle
  • Skilled in architectural design, specifically building fault-tolerant, high-throughput distributed systems
  • Hands-on cloud experience with AWS and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or Pulumi
  • A commitment to clean code and engineering best practices, including RESTful/API design, Git, and maintainable technical documentation
  • A hands-on, data-driven mindset that actively builds new capabilities, challenges the status quo with clear evidence, and adds distinct, complementary perspectives to the team
  • Proficiency in Business English

It is awesome if you also have

  • Hands-on experience with asynchronous programming using Kotlin Coroutines and reactive data streams (e.g., Flow, RxJava, Project Reactor)
  • Practical know-how in taking ML models and productionizing them within backend services
  • Knowledge or practical experience with geospatial data processing

About the company

  • We mean diversity, and we put it in numbers: 130+ people, 40 languages, 40% female (vs. ø26% in the tech industry), ø33 years of age, and yes, we do have Schlager-Fans among us

  • We have a very supportive and appreciative working environment with a lot of autonomy, a flat hierarchy, and professional growth possibilities
  • We work in a hybrid mode, with weekly team days for better collaboration and nurturing interpersonal connections. When onsite, we work in a modern, kid- and pet-friendly Better Space in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg
  • Remote work from anywhere for up to 12 weeks in total per year
  • 30 vacation days in a 5-day/week working model
  • Kindergarten grant and a Company Pension scheme
  • Regular team breakfasts, fitness & wellness classes, company runs, and other events. Fruits, snacks, drinks, and coffee with a variety of milk are a given - but yes, we have them
  • Outstanding flexibility we are proud of - and, of course, the best colleagues in the world!

About the team:

Location services are at the heart of any delivery experience, and the Features team of Better Places tribe is building a world-class solution that integrates multiple providers to get accurate geocoding, enables geocode corrections, and serves relevant information about addresses worldwide. We use open-source and proprietary data and algorithms to build a highly scalable system that serves billions of requests yearly.
