Job description
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Network Administration Specialist. This position implements, installs, maintains, and secures complex network and security hardware and software systems, as well as resolves network problems across a large network with multiple sites.
Supervision Received and Exercised Receives direction from division and department management staff.
May act as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results., * Ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques, and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
- Installs, maintains, configures, and secures network equipment including routers, switches, network management system, wireless systems, unified voice systems, and network communication systems.
- Installs, maintains, and configures security devices and appliances including firewalls, IDS, IPS, and internet filtering systems.
- Builds and secures network tunnels to external entities.
- Provides technical support to city staff; responds to requests for service; troubleshoots and fixes network issues in a timely manner.
- Develop and maintain documentation of the entire network.
- Assists in planning and preparing for future IT network support needs. Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials, equipment and vendors, assisting with specifications, and requisitioning materials as needed. Evaluates the impact of new system and application software on network systems.
- Works with vendors on implementations of new network systems.Assists vendors in troubleshooting network problems when necessary.
- Assists with developing and recommending updates to department programs, policies, standards and procedures; prepares performance statistics and reports.
- Identifies and mitigates security risks; analyzes security reports for misuse of the network.
- Monitors vendors to ensure that work is completed in accordance with specifications, city policies and regulations.
- Performs administration duties including user account maintenance, performance monitoring, resource utilization monitoring, load balancing and performance tuning.
- Develop network recovery procedures to minimize system downtime; provide technical support for maintaining system reliability and availability.
- Provides technical training to other city staff.
- Serves as liaison for the department with other departments, divisions, the public and outside agencies. Provides information within the area of assignment. Handles inquiries and complaints from start through resolution in an efficient, courteous and timely manner.
Requirements
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include a hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions., Three years of increasingly responsible network administration experience., Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major in computer science or a related field. Specialized training in network operating systems is desirable. May substitute a combination of equivalent education and related experience. The city assesses 1.5 years of fulltime experience as equivalent to one year of education.
Licenses and Certifications
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Network administration or Internet administration certificate or training is desirable.
Special Requirement
Certain city functions operate on a 24 hour per day, seven days per week schedule, and may require support on any shift. May be required to respond to calls for assistance during any shift.

Data communication networks and their software and hardware components, such as Cisco IOS, routers, switches, firewalls, VOIP, VPN and network security systems. Principles and techniques of computer systems and networks. Troubleshooting, repairing or modifying electronic control equipment. Analyzing complex problems, identifying alternative solutions, anticipating consequences of proposed actions, recommending best options, and implementing approved solution in support of goals. Planning, organizing and prioritizing assignments. Meeting critical deadlines. Managing multiple assignments. Reading, interpreting and applying information from technical publications, manuals and other documents. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Explaining complex technical systems in clear and simple terms understandable to non- technical staff. Helping others understand and manage change. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Retirement
- Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after)for each year of service, applied to the employee’s highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the city’s salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.
Deferred Compensation
- The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
- Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental, and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium + 50% of dependent premium.
Life and AD&D Insurance
- City provides $20,000 insurance at no cost.
- Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase.
Disability Insurance
- City provides a long term disability policy:
- LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits may begin after 90 days of an approved disability leave. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation.
