Job description

The Junior Data Engineer supports the design, development, and maintenance of the data pipelines, integrations, and data models that power reporting and analytics across our construction and disaster-recovery programs. Working alongside senior data engineers, analysts, and IT staff, you will move data from source systems-project management, ERP/accounting, timekeeping, field-capture, and government reporting platforms-into clean, well-structured datasets that leaders and clients can trust. This is a hands-on, growth-oriented role ideal for an early-career engineer who wants to build real production data systems in a mission-driven environment., * Build & maintain pipelines. Develop, test, and maintain ETL/ELT data pipelines that ingest data from internal systems and third-party sources into our data warehouse/lakehouse, under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Integrate via APIs. Connect to and pull data from REST APIs and vendor platforms (project management, financial, HR/timekeeping, and government reporting systems), handling authentication, pagination, and scheduled refreshes.
  • Write & tune SQL. Author and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and views to transform, join, and aggregate data for downstream reporting.
  • Develop in Python. Write clean, reusable Python for data ingestion, transformation, validation, and automation of routine data tasks.
  • Support the Microsoft/Azure stack. Help build and operate pipelines and datasets using tools such as Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL / SQL Server, Azure Storage, and Microsoft Fabric/Synapse, feeding Power BI reporting.
  • Ensure data quality. Implement validation checks, monitor pipeline runs, troubleshoot failures, and help resolve data discrepancies so program and financial reporting stays accurate.
  • Model data for analytics. Assist in designing and maintaining dimensional models and reporting tables that reflect how projects, funding sources, cost codes, and geographies relate.
  • Document & collaborate. Maintain clear documentation of data sources, pipelines, and definitions; use version control (Git) and participate in code reviews.
  • Partner with the business. Work with project controls, accounting, program management, and compliance teams to understand data needs and support their reporting requirements.
  • Protect sensitive data. Follow security, privacy, and compliance practices appropriate to government contracting and sensitive project data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data/Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field-or equivalent practical experience or relevant certifications.
  • 0-2 years of experience (including internships, co-ops, or academic projects) working with data pipelines, databases, or analytics.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, including joins, aggregations, and basic query optimization.
  • Proficiency in Python for data manipulation and scripting (e.g., pandas, requests, or similar libraries).
  • Familiarity with consuming REST APIs and working with structured data formats such as JSON and CSV.
  • Exposure to at least one cloud data platform-Microsoft Azure preferred (Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Synapse/Microsoft Fabric)-with willingness to grow deep expertise in the Microsoft/Azure ecosystem.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Ability to work on-site at the Galveston, Texas headquarters.
  • Must be able to pass a background check; U.S. work authorization required (some government projects may require the ability to obtain a security clearance).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, or Power BI.
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic CI/CD concepts.
  • Experience with data warehousing concepts and dimensional (star-schema) modeling.
  • Exposure to construction, engineering, ERP/accounting (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint/Vista), or project-management systems (e.g., Procore), or to government/grant reporting.
  • Interest in geospatial data (GIS) given the field- and location-based nature of our projects.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals / DP-900, DP-203).
