Job description
The Telecommunications Mechanic will assist one or more technicians with Base Telephone Services (BTS). A successful candidate will be responsive and reliable, detail-oriented, have good judgment and excellent problem solving skills and be punctual. The Telecommunications Mechanic II will be responsible for installing and de-installing equipment racks, cable trays, J-hooks, fire sleeves, patch panels, wire managers, 110 blocks, 66blocks, jacks, face plates, and other communication equipment. They also install, uninstall and remove all instruments, service lines, and LAN cabling associated with the job site area, including cat3, cat5, cat5e, cat6, and cat6a, multi-pair, and fiber optic, coax cabling, outside plant cabling, and outside plant infrastructure. The Telecommunications Mechanic may perform specialized machine duties, or test telephone switch parts as assigned and will be required to lift up to 60 pounds, lift and climb ladders and work in confined spaces., Join our Talent Community (https://talentconnect.uicalaska.com/government-services/talentcommunity) to receive updates on new opportunities and future events.
Requirements

A High School Diploma or GED is required
-
A minimum of three (3) years experience performing equipment troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance for structured cabling systems is required though preference may be given to candidate(s) with one or more years’ experience installing, splicing and servicing Cat 5, 5e, 6 and fiber optics. Any experience splicing aerial cable from bucket lift, aerial lift and/or other hoist mechanism is a plus

IT fundamentals and experience with Ethernet and Fiber Optic technologies is required.

Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts

Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds

Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time

Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
